Toyota Innova Hycross Converted To Run On CNG: Achieves Remarkable 35km Mileage!
The Toyota Innova Hycross is a highly favoured MPV in India, especially among politicians and long-distance travellers. This model, known for its fuel efficiency, has been modified to achieve even greater mileage. Originally offering a hybrid version with a maximum mileage of 23.24 km per litre, the modified version now delivers up to 35 km per kg.
This remarkable increase in mileage was achieved by converting the petrol engine to run on CNG. The Innova Hycross does not come with a CNG option in India, so an aftermarket kit was used for this transformation. Sai Fuel Vadodara, a company specialising in CNG fittings, carried out this conversion, marking the first time a hybrid Innova Hycross has been adapted to use CNG.

The CNG kit was sourced from Euro Gas Poland and includes ISIU, ECM, and a CNG bearing-reducer. This setup allows the car to achieve 35 km per kg of CNG. However, installing the kit has reduced the boot space significantly, limiting the ability to carry large luggage. This is a common issue with CNG vehicles.
Unlike Tata Motors' approach of using two smaller cylinders, this car uses a single larger cylinder, exacerbating the boot space problem. Despite this limitation, passenger comfort remains unaffected. The vehicle still accommodates seven passengers comfortably without impacting their travel experience.
The cost of converting the Innova Hycross to a CNG vehicle remains undisclosed. However, estimates suggest it might have cost up to INR 1 lakh. Typically, converting a petrol car to CNG costs over INR 40,000, but this special kit likely demanded a higher price.
This modification has garnered significant attention due to its impressive fuel efficiency and innovative approach. While it presents challenges like reduced boot space, it offers an eco-friendly alternative for those seeking better mileage without compromising passenger comfort.
