Toyota Glanza Faces Sales Challenges In India Amidst Competitive Hatchback Market
Toyota and Suzuki have formed a strategic alliance, allowing Toyota to re-badge and sell Maruti Suzuki cars under its brand in India. A notable example is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which is marketed as the Toyota Rumion. This collaboration has expanded Toyota's offerings in the Indian market.
Another vehicle resulting from this partnership is the Toyota Glanza, a premium hatchback that is essentially a re-badged version of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The Glanza was the first Maruti Suzuki model to be re-badged and sold by Toyota in India. Following its introduction, other models like the Toyota Rumion were launched.

The Toyota Glanza was introduced to the Indian market in June 2019. Since its launch, it has played a significant role in boosting Toyota's sales figures. Despite being on sale for approximately six years, it continues to achieve notable monthly sales. However, during the fiscal year 2024-25, the Glanza experienced a decline in sales performance.
In the fiscal year 2024-25, the Toyota Glanza ranked eighth among the top 10 best-selling hatchbacks in India. It recorded a 7% drop in sales, with only 48,839 units sold compared to 52,262 units in the previous fiscal year. This decline highlights challenges faced by the model in maintaining its market position.
The Toyota Glanza is available in five colour options: Insta Blue, Gaming Grey, Enticing Silver, Sporting Red, and Cafe White. It features a 1.2-litre petrol engine that delivers 66 kW at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. Buyers can choose between manual and AMT gearbox options for this engine.
The manual version of the Glanza offers a mileage of 22.35 km/l, while the AMT variant provides slightly better mileage at 22.94 km/l. The vehicle's fuel tank capacity is 37 litres. Additionally, there is a CNG engine option available with a power output of 57 kW at 6,000 rpm and torque of 98.5 Nm at 4,300 rpm.
Pricing and Competitors
The CNG variant of the Glanza boasts an impressive mileage of 30.61 km/kg with a CNG tank capacity of 55 litres. It's important to note that these mileage figures are sourced from Toyota's official website and may vary slightly in real-world conditions.
In terms of pricing, the Toyota Glanza starts at Rs. 6.90 lakhs and goes up to Rs. 10 lakhs (ex-showroom). In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is priced between Rs. 6.70-9.92 lakhs (ex-showroom). The Glanza carries a slightly higher price tag due to its Toyota branding.
Features and Safety
The Toyota Glanza offers several modern features such as a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heads-up display, steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment, and rear AC vents. These features enhance comfort and convenience for drivers and passengers alike.
Safety features include six airbags, vehicle stability control, ABS with EBD, and hill hold control. These elements contribute to making the Glanza a safe choice for families seeking a premium hatchback with advanced safety measures.
Direct competitors to the Toyota Glanza include models like Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno also competes directly with it in terms of features and pricing. The Glanza appeals to middle-class buyers looking for a premium hatchback with modern amenities and excellent fuel efficiency.
