Toyota USA Foundation Commits $6.5 Million To Enhance Educational Opportunities In San Antonio

Toyota is enhancing its community involvement in San Antonio with a significant investment in education. Through the Driving Possibilities initiative, the Toyota USA Foundation will allocate up to $6.5 million over five years to the East Central Independent School District (East Central ISD). This program aims to equip students and teachers with innovative tools and programs that foster foundational skills, build confidence, and create personalised paths to success.

San Antonio marks the ninth location for this national initiative, which focuses on workforce development, education, and community engagement. "For more than 20 years, Toyota has played a critical role in the booming Texas economy," said Governor Greg Abbott. "Part of what made Texas the eighth-largest economy in the world is our growing and skilled workforce. This $6.5 million in grants to East Central ISD will help equip students in San Antonio with the skills they need to get good-paying jobs in high-demand industries like auto manufacturing."

Driving Possibilities is a collaboration between Toyota USA Foundation, East Central ISD, Texas A&M University San Antonio’s Institute for School and Community Partnerships, and United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. Select schools within East Central ISD will develop an innovative STEM program and engage in experiential learning. Teachers will receive professional development, mentorship, coaching, and resources needed for effective STEM instruction.

United Way has joined as a wraparound services provider through the Family Resource Center and Dual Generation initiative. The new Family Resource Center at Pecan Valley STEM Academy will address basic needs and enhance family engagement to support all East Central ISD students' learning experiences. The Dual Generation initiative will offer families workforce training, educational programs, and quality childcare to bolster student academic success.

"Education and workforce development are longtime priorities for Toyota Texas," said Susann Kazunas, president of Toyota Texas. "The future of our company and other companies across Texas depend on strong pipelines of students prepared to be the workforce of tomorrow." As part of its expansion efforts in San Antonio, Toyota announced a $531 million rear axle plant addition in June 2024.

This new facility will supply rear axles for vehicles assembled onsite as well as those manufactured in Mexico. Construction is underway with hiring plans set for operations beginning in 2026. "Toyota’s commitment to giving is truly remarkable," said Roland Toscano, superintendent of East Central ISD. "Together we are customizing learning experiences that challenge every student to grow academically."

Driving Possibilities Initiative

The Driving Possibilities initiative was launched by the Toyota USA Foundation in 2022 as a unique way to unite educators, nonprofits, industry leaders, and communities nationwide. With over 65 years of active community support across the U.S., this effort spans PreK-12 education with roots based on a model developed in West Dallas.

A total of more than $75 million has been announced through multi-year grants involving local nonprofits, educational partners, and communities where Toyota team members reside. Funded by both Toyota USA Foundation along with additional contributions from Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) and Toyota Financial Services (TFS), it represents one of their most comprehensive social innovation efforts ever undertaken.
