Toyota Invests Over $50 Million To Enhance Arizona Proving Grounds For Vehicle Testing
Toyota Motor North America has initiated a significant development project at its Arizona Proving Grounds, investing over $50 million. This expansion includes a 5.5-mile oval track and enhanced facilities for testing vehicles and technology. The new infrastructure is expected to be largely completed by the end of this year, with plans for an advanced driver assistance technology facility in the future.
The Arizona Mobility Test Center at Toyota Arizona Proving Grounds (AMTC at TAPG) has been a resource for vehicle testing since 2021. Managed by Intertek Transportation Technologies, it offers rental operations and tenant services to various companies. Since opening to external entities, the facility has hosted 37 organizations, tested approximately 286 vehicles, and conducted around 203,400 hours of testing.
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs expressed gratitude towards Toyota for its investment in the state, highlighting how such initiatives drive economic growth and position Arizona as a leader in automotive innovation. Chairman Leo Biasiucci of the Arizona House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee also praised Toyota's commitment to Wittmann, Arizona.
The AMTC at TAPG spans about 11,650 acres in the Sonoran Desert near Wittmann, approximately 60 miles from Phoenix. It features 77 miles of testing surfaces, including paved roads and off-road tracks. Established in 1993, this site has been crucial for testing over 50 Toyota and Lexus models intended for the North American market.
Toyota has been part of North America's cultural landscape for nearly seven decades. The company is dedicated to sustainable mobility through its Toyota and Lexus brands and operates more than 1,800 dealerships across the continent. Employing nearly 64,000 people in North America, Toyota has produced close to 49 million vehicles at its 14 manufacturing plants.
In spring 2025, Toyota will start producing automotive batteries for electrified vehicles at its North Carolina plant. With more electrified options than any other automaker—32 models currently available—Toyota continues to lead in this sector.
Research & Development Efforts
For over half a century, Toyota's Research & Development teams in North America have contributed significantly to engineering projects for popular vehicles on U.S. roads. These teams are now focused on developing next-generation vehicles and innovative mobility concepts that enhance transportation of people and goods.
Toyota's dedication to innovation is evident as it secured more patents from the United States Patent and Trademark Office than any other automaker for the past eleven years consecutively—2,428 patents were granted in 2024 alone. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, these R&D groups strive to make life safer and more enjoyable through their work.
Globally investing around $1 million per hour on R&D ensures that Toyota consistently develops high-quality vehicles that meet consumer demands while pushing technological boundaries.
