Explore The Totally Awesome! Cars And Culture Exhibit At Petersen Automotive Museum
The Petersen Automotive Museum's latest exhibit, "Totally Awesome! Cars and Culture of the '80s and '90s," offers a deep dive into the vehicles, fashion, and technology that defined these two influential decades. Located in the Mullin Grand Salon, this exhibit highlights the bold automotive designs and cultural innovations from the early '80s to the digital advancements of the '90s.
Featuring over 30 vehicles, this exhibit includes iconic models like the 1995 McLaren F1, a unique 1995 Lotec C1000 supercar, and the famous Audi S1 E2 Group B rally car. Visitors can also see the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder replica from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," along with rare concept cars, high-performance imports, motorcycles, and quirky creations.
The display is enriched with interactive elements that celebrate '80s and '90s fashion, music, and technology. Retro arcade games and mannequins dressed in period-appropriate outfits recreate a cultural backdrop. The vintage arcade installation was curated by the Museum of the Game and Griffin McLemore. Acid-wash denim and neon accessories were selected in collaboration with ASU FIDM to capture the era's fashion essence.
Terry L. Karges, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum, stated: "This era defined what it meant to be behind the wheel, as cars became bold expressions of personal identity." He added that the exhibit acts as a sensory time machine bringing back the energy and style of those decades.
