Top Electric Carmakers (July 2025) - Tata Still On Top As MG Closes In

In July 2025, the Indian market for electric passenger vehicles, spanning sedans, SUVs, and MPVs, saw a significant surge in demand, marking a 93% increase in year-on-year sales with a record of 15,423 units sold. This period not only highlighted an all-time high for monthly sales within the year but also underscored the growing consumer interest in electric vehicles.

Tata Motors emerged as the frontrunner in this booming market, achieving the highest sales for the month with 6,019 units. The brand's diverse electric lineup, which features models like the Punch, Nexon, Currv, Tiago, Tigor, and the newly launched Harrier, played a pivotal role in achieving an 18% growth compared to the previous year.

July 2025 Electric Car Sales Summary

However, despite this achievement, Tata Motors witnessed a significant reduction in its market share, dropping to 38% from a previous high of 67%, as competition within the sector intensified.

Following Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor India secured the second position in electric car sales, with a tally of 5,061 EVs sold in July 2025. This achievement not only marked the company's best performance for the year but also indicated a substantial increase in market share to 32%, up from 16% the previous year. The introduction of premium models like the M9 MPV and Cyberster electric sportscar, sold exclusively through MG Select Channels, added to the company’s sales momentum.

Mahindra took the third spot recording electric vehicle sales of 2,810 units in July 2025. Despite a decline in sales compared to earlier months of the year, Mahindra's market share doubled to 17% from the previous 8%. The company's introduction of its Born Electric models, the BE6 and XEV 9e, have strengthened its position in the Indian electric vehicle market and promise to boost future sales.

Other key players in the Indian EV market in July 2025 included Hyundai and BYD, with sales of 610 and 457 units respectively, while Kia India reported its best monthly EV sales of the year with 57 units. Hyundai’s sales continued to be boosted by the Creta Electric , whereas BYD saw a slight decrease from June's sales. Kia introduced the Carens Clavis EV last month, marking its entry into the mass-market EV segment.

Citroen, however, experienced its lowest monthly sales for the year, adding only 41 units to the electric car tally. The company's sole electric offering, the e-C3, struggled to attract consumer interest, reflecting the challenges some brands face in the competitive electric vehicle market.

Luxury Electric Vehicle Sales Overview

In the luxury segment of the electric vehicle market, BMW led with 233 unit sales in July 2025, capturing a dominant 58% market share. Mercedes Benz followed with 85 units, holding a 28% share of the luxury EV marke with Volvo claiming third place with 41 units sold last moth. Porsche, Rolls Royce, and Audi also contributed to the luxury EV sales figures, albeit with smaller numbers - 6,2 and 1 unit(s) respectively, underscoring the niche yet growing interest in high-end electric vehicles.
