Honda's #89 HART Civic Type R TCR Secures Top Five Finish In Daytona Endurance Challenge
The IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season kicked off with the Endurance Challenge at Daytona, where Honda achieved a commendable fifth-place finish. The #89 HART Honda Civic Type R TCR, driven by Steve Eich, Tyler Chambers, and Chad Gilsinger, completed 109 laps at Daytona International Speedway. They started tenth but steadily climbed the ranks to finish on the lead lap.
Unfortunately, not all Honda entries had a smooth race. The #5 KMW Motorsports with TMR Engineering Honda faced an early exit due to a collision within the first hour. Meanwhile, the #93 MMG Honda Civic Type R TCR retired after three hours because of electrical issues. Despite these setbacks, the team remained optimistic about future races.
Tyler Chambers expressed satisfaction with their performance: "My first stint went pretty much as planned, and we didn't run into any major issues. We had a small infraction during our pit stop, but otherwise everybody did great. We've worked really hard and we're proud of the top 5 result. We all just rallied as we always do to do the best we can, that's our dynamic."
Chad Gilsinger shared his excitement about completing the race: "I'm just super excited that we finished, as we've had some mishaps at Daytona in the past. This event hasn't always been kind to us, but we love coming here nonetheless. We're really happy that we completed the race, and beyond that, our goal is to be the fastest or the highest placing Civic. Obviously, we'd rather finish on the podium, but a top five is good and I'm happy."
The #89 car's journey began with Eich taking charge of the initial laps before handing over to Chambers. By halfway through the race, they had advanced to seventh place in their class. Gilsinger then took over for the final stint, securing two more positions to finish fifth.
Upcoming Challenges for Honda
Looking ahead, Honda will participate in the second round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season at Sebring International Raceway. The Alan Jay Automotive Network 120 will take place on Friday, March 14th at 2:15 PM. The team aims to build on their Daytona performance and achieve even better results.
The race results for Honda were mixed: The #89 HART Honda Civic Type R TCR finished fifth; however, both #93 MMG and #5 KMW Motorsports with TMR Engineering entries did not complete their races due to technical issues.
