American EV pioneer Tesla has finally arrived in India, opening its first "Tesla Experience Centre" showroom in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex and launching the Model Y in India at a starting price of Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Tesla Model Y arrives in India as a full import, but thanks to its aggressive pricing, it goes up against the Kia EV6 electric crossover. So let's take a look at the major talking points of the Tesla Model Y and the Kia EV6 on paper and see how they compare head-to-head.

Tesla Model Y vs Kia EV6 - Powertrain & Performance
The Tesla Model Y is offered in two variants - a standard RWD and a Long Range RWD. The standard variant delivers a power output of 295hp and 420 Nm of torque, while the long-range variant ups this to 340hp and 450Nm.
The Tesla Model Y can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range trim improves this slightly to 5.6 seconds.
On the other hand, the Kia EV6 is offered in India in the GT-Line AWD trim level, which comes equipped with a dual-motor setup delivering 325hp and a higher torque of 605 Nm, resulting in a 0-100 km/h time of 5.3 seconds.
In terms of drivetrain, the Tesla only offers RWD configurations (with AWD available globally), whereas the Kia EV6 features AWD as standard in India.

Tesla Model Y Vs Kia EV6 - Battery Capacity, Range & Charging
Battery capacity differs between the two SUVs. The Tesla Model Y offers 60 kWh and 75 kWh battery packs depending on the variant. In comparison, the Kia EV6 packs a larger 84 kWh battery with a lower claimed range of 528 km (WLTP).
On the charging front, the Kia offers up to 350 kW ultra-fast DC charging that can charge the battery from 10-80% in just 18 minutes. Tesla also offers 250kW fast charging through its superchargers and claims that it can add 267km of range in just 15 minutes. Tesla currently plans to install 16 Superchargers and 16 destination chargers in India.

Verdict: Tesla Model Y vs Kia EV6 - Which One To Choose?
On paper, both the Tesla Model Y and the Kia EV6 are quite nicely matched, with the Kia offering more power and all-wheel drive. The Tesla Model Y, on the other hand, brings a longer range and a larger boot along with better ground clearance at a lower starting price.
We are currently unable to tell you how the Kia and the Tesla compare against each other on the road, as we haven't driven the Model Y yet. Stay tuned for more on that when it does happen.
However, while both crossover electric SUVs are quite closely matched on paper, we're quite sure that the hype surrounding the arrival of the Tesla Model Y is sure to draw attention to it, at least in the near future.
