Tesla Model Y Launch Could Take Place On July 15: Prices Likely To Start Around Rs 43 Lakh

Tesla is gearing up to make its debut in the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom at Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai on 15 July. The Tesla Model Y will be the initial offering for Indian customers. Known as the world's best-selling electric vehicle, the Model Y will be imported from China in a completely built-up form.

The Model Y is available in two variants: rear-wheel drive (RWD) and long-range all-wheel drive (AWD). According to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle, the RWD version can travel up to 593km on a single charge.

Features

The Model Y boasts a sleek, coupe-like design with LED lights adorning both ends. Its minimalist exterior is complemented by a similarly simple interior. The dashboard features a 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system that controls most functions. An additional 8-inch screen is available for second-row passengers.

Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, the Model Y measures 4,797 mm in length, 1,982 mm in width (with mirrors folded), and stands at 1,624 mm tall. It has a ground clearance of 167 mm and comes with either 19-inch or 20-inch wheels. The larger wheels may affect range; thus, India-spec models might feature 19-inch wheels for better efficiency.

Pricing & Import Details

The pricing for Tesla's Model Y in India is expected to be around Rs 43 lakh (ex-showroom). It is also worth mentioning that CBU cars priced up to USD 40,000 incur a basic customs duty of 70% in India. Also, according to Bloomberg, 5 units were imported from Shanghai at just under USD 32,000 each.

Tesla's entry into India follows years of speculation and discussions about local manufacturing. Despite government efforts to encourage domestic production through reduced tariffs and new EV policies, Tesla has opted to import fully assembled vehicles instead.

Market Strategy

The company plans to operate through a direct-to-customer retail model with company-owned showrooms. Local personnel have been hired for roles such as store manager and sales executive. Tesla's decision comes amid challenges like excess manufacturing capacity at other factories and declining global sales.

Commercial records indicate that between January and June, Tesla imported vehicles and accessories worth nearly $1 million into India from China and the US. These imports included six Model Ys—5 standard range versions and 1 long-range—as well as several Superchargers.

DriveSpark Thinks

The automotive industry eagerly anticipates Tesla's launch in India. While there is significant enthusiasm among fans willing to purchase regardless of price, mainstream success will depend heavily on competitive pricing strategies.
