Taycan Turbo GT Achieves New Lap Record For Electric Cars At Interlagos Circuit
The Taycan Turbo GT, equipped with the Weissach package and Pirelli Trofeo RS tires, has set a new electric car lap record at Interlagos, São Paulo. Felipe Nasr, a three-time IMSA champion, achieved a time of 1:42.1 minutes on February 5, 2025. This performance surpassed the previous record by nearly eight seconds and was faster than the 911 Turbo S's earlier time.
Brazil's Interlagos circuit is renowned for its challenging layout, featuring high-speed sections and significant elevation changes. The track is officially named Autodrome José Carlos Pace and is famous for hosting Formula 1 races and the FIA Endurance Championship (WEC). It gained global recognition due to Ayrton Senna's successes in the early 1990s.
Felipe Nasr expressed his excitement about driving the Taycan Turbo GT after winning the 24 Hours of Daytona. He noted its impressive acceleration and torque, highlighting its overall performance. "It's amazing how quickly the car accelerates and delivers its power," said Nasr. He also praised its precise steering and stability under heavy braking.
Porsche Brazil's CEO, Peter Vogel, stated that setting this record aimed to showcase the strengths of the new Taycan model series as it debuts in Brazil. The Taycan Turbo GT's outstanding performance has been evident in various motorsport events worldwide.
The Taycan model line has set records on diverse circuits globally. In January 2025, Jens Richter set a record for the longest continuous vehicle drift on ice by an electric vehicle in a Taycan GTS. Earlier, Lars Kern achieved remarkable times at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and Nürburgring Nordschleife.
The Taycan Turbo GT serves as a Formula E safety car since May 2024. Driven by Bruno Correia, it is the most powerful safety car in an FIA World Championship. Two such cars are present at each Formula E race, equipped with safety gear and advanced communication systems.
Technical Specifications
Porsche has enhanced its all-electric sports sedans lineup with the Taycan Turbo GT models. These vehicles feature a more efficient pulse inverter using silicon carbide on the rear axle. They can achieve up to 1019 hp peak power output briefly with Attack Mode providing an additional boost of up to 160 hp for ten seconds.
The Taycan Turbo GT benefits from intelligent lightweight construction measures, reducing weight by up to 157 lbs compared to the Taycan Turbo S. Carbon-fiber components contribute significantly to this weight reduction. The Weissach package further enhances racetrack performance by removing the rear bench seat.
