Tata Harrier & Safari Petrol Launch Date Revealed - 170hp Turbocharged Engine

Tata Motors will introduce petrol-powered versions of both the Safari and Harrier SUVs in India on December 9, 2025. This new engine will see Tata expand the ICE lineups of the Harrier and Safari beyond diesel for the first time.

The launch on the 9th of December will see Tata's 1.5-litre TGDi turbo-petrol engine, expected to debut in the new Sierra on the 25th of November, make its way onto the Harrier and Safari. The new engine was developed under the company's next-generation "Hyperion" powertrain programme.

Tata Harrier amp amp Safari Petrol Launch Date Revealed

The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TGDi unit, which was first revealed at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, produces 170 PS at 5,000 rpm and 280 Nm of torque between 2,000 - 3,500 rpm. The engine features direct fuel injection, an electronically controlled wastegate turbocharger, and integrated thermal management for efficiency and lower emissions.

Both the Safari and Harrier petrol models will offer 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options, tuned for responsive acceleration and high-speed cruising. Tata Motors has also introduced enhanced engine mounts, new NVH insulation, and recalibrated suspension to ensure refinement levels comparable to the diesel models.

Built on the Omega architecture derived from Land Rover's D8 platform, both SUVs will retain their signature driving characteristics and safety standards. Tata is expected to maintain the same feature set as their respective diesel variants, including the 12.3-inch infotainment screen, touch-based HVAC controls, digital instrument cluster, and ADAS Level 2 safety suite.

Visually, the Safari and Harrier petrol will mirror the updated 2025 design language with LED matrix headlamps, connected tail-lamp strips, and new dual-tone alloy wheels. Cabin trim options will include signature colour themes, ventilated seats, and ambient lighting identical to those seen on the recently refreshed diesel lineup.

The petrol variants will be positioned slightly lower in price compared to the diesel versions, expanding Tata's reach among urban buyers and metro markets where diesel restrictions continue to tighten. This move also helps Tata compete more directly with petrol SUVs such as the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, MG Hector Plus, and Toyota Innova Hycross.

Deliveries for the Safari and Harrier petrol are expected to begin by January 2026, with variant-wise pricing and complete technical details to be confirmed at launch. Both SUVs will be built at Tata's Pune facility alongside their diesel counterparts.
