Tata Motors Discontinues Nexon EV Long-Range Variant Amid Rising Electric Vehicle Popularity
Tata Motors, a prominent Indian car manufacturer, has been focusing on electric vehicles for several years. The Nexon EV, an electric version of the popular Tata Nexon, has gained significant attention. Recently, Tata Motors quietly ceased the sale of one of its Nexon EV variants. This move comes as electric vehicles are becoming more popular in India, with many opting for them over traditional petrol and diesel cars.
In early 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit India, Tata Motors launched the Nexon EV. Initially, its variants had different names but were later renamed to Medium-Range, 45, and Long-Range. The Long-Range variant offered a slightly extended range compared to the Medium-Range variant. However, Tata Motors has now discontinued the Long-Range variant without any formal announcement.

The Medium-Range variant, abbreviated as 'MR', remains available along with the 45 variant. The Long-Range variant's name has been removed from Tata Motors' official website. Despite this change, there have been no alterations to the car's pricing or other features. The Medium-Range variant starts at Rs. 12.49 lakh ex-showroom, while the 45 variant begins at Rs. 13.99 lakh.
The Nexon EV Medium-Range is equipped with a 30kWh battery that offers a maximum range of 275km. In contrast, the 45 variant features a 45kWh battery capable of delivering a range of 489km. These specifications highlight the differences in range between the two remaining variants.

The Tata Nexon EV faces competition from other electric vehicles like the Mahindra XUV400 and MG ZS EV in the Indian market. Despite earlier reports suggesting that both Medium-Range and Long-Range variants might be discontinued, only the Long-Range variant has been affected so far.
Although sales of the more expensive Long-Range variant have stopped, it will still be available in showrooms until existing stocks are sold out. This provides customers with a limited opportunity to purchase this variant if they prefer its features.
The decision to discontinue one variant reflects Tata Motors' strategy to streamline its offerings while maintaining competitive pricing and features in the growing electric vehicle market in India.
