Tata Motors Reports Decline In Sales Amid Market Hurdles - Punch The Bestseller
In May 2025, the Indian passenger car market faced several hurdles. The Indo-Pakistan conflict notably impacted sales, particularly in Northern India. Additionally, unexpected rains across the nation further dampened consumer sentiment. Despite these challenges, there was a slight year-on-year growth of 0.2%, reaching 3,49,713 units. However, month-on-month sales saw a decline of 1.1%. Most original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) experienced losses during this period.
Tata Motors Sales Performance
Tata Motors secured the fourth position on the sales list but encountered reduced sales both year-on-year and month-on-month. Their market share fell to 11.9%. In May 2025, Tata Motors sold 41,557 units, marking an 11% decrease from the 46,700 units sold in May 2024. Compared to April 2025's sales of 45,199 units, there was an 8% decline.

The Tata Punch emerged as the top-selling model for the company with 13,133 units sold. This represented a significant year-on-year drop of 31% from May 2024's figure of 18,949 units. However, month-on-month sales improved by 5% from April's total of 12,496 units. The Nexon SUV also showed positive growth with a year-on-year increase of 14%, selling 13,096 units compared to May 2024's figure of 11,457 units.
The Tata Tiago recorded a year-on-year growth in sales with a total of 6,407 units sold last month. This was an increase of 8% over May 2024's sales of 5,927 units. However, month-on-month figures revealed a decline of 23% compared to April's total of 8,277 units. Meanwhile, the Curvv's ICE and EV versions collectively sold 3,063 units in May.
Despite being a strong contender in the compact SUV segment, Curvv experienced a month-on-month decrease of 3% from April's figure of 3,149 units. The Altroz also faced reduced demand with sales falling by both year-on-year and month-on-month metrics to reach just 2,779 units in May.
The Tata Harrier and Safari models experienced significant declines in their sales figures. Safari recorded a drop to just 1,109 units sold in May—a decrease of both year-on-year by 33% and month-on-month drop of 17%. Similarly affected was the Tata Tigor which saw its numbers fall by nearly half year-over-year at only managing around one thousand seventy-six vehicles leaving showrooms last month.
Harrier’s performance wasn’t much better either; it managed only eight hundred ninety-four unit transactions throughout all thirty-one days within this particular calendar period—a stark contrast when juxtaposed against previous years’ results where they boasted sixteen hundred twenty-five successful deals back then! Month-over-month comparisons weren’t favorable either since they dipped twelve percent lower than what had been achieved during April 2025 too!
