Tata Shakes Up NATRAX Again - Hyperion Now Tops The Charts With Harrier & Safari

Tata Motors has revealed performance and fuel-efficiency details for the upcoming petrol-powered versions of its Harrier and Safari SUVs ahead of their official launch in India, sharing a video demonstrating the new turbo petrol engine in controlled testing at NATRAX in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

The video shows a red Tata Harrier badged with "Hyperion" undergoing calibration before track runs, followed by the Safari Red Dark Edition fitted with the same new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, an engine recently introduced in the Tata Sierra SUV.

In the controlled NATRAX testing, the Harrier returned a certified fuel efficiency figure of 25.9 kmpl, while the Safari recorded 25 kmpl, with the Harrier's mileage officially recognised as the highest for a petrol SUV with a manual transmission in India by the India Book of Records.

During the same test session, Tata Motors said the Safari achieved a top speed of 216 kmph, demonstrating the performance capability of the Hyperion petrol powertrain in controlled conditions; the company noted that the results do not reflect real-world driving conditions.

Both SUVs are powered by the 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine producing 170 hp of power and 280 Nm of torque, with transmission options including a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque-converter automatic, according to the test details released by the company.

The Harrier and Safari have been offered in India exclusively with diesel engines since launch, and the introduction of petrol versions represents a significant expansion of powertrain options for both models ahead of their planned market debut.

The official launch and price announcement for the petrol-powered Harrier and Safari are expected next month, with Tata Motors yet to confirm specific dates or pricing as they prepare to bring the Hyperion petrol variants to dealerships. With the addition of petrol engine options, Tata Motors aims to broaden the appeal of its popular Harrier and Safari SUVs in a market where petrol powertrains are widely demanded alongside diesel alternatives.
