Tamil Nadu Government Orders Electric Buses For Chennai & Madurai To Enhance Public Transport

Chennai's public transport is set to welcome electric buses soon. The Tamil Nadu government has ordered thousands of these buses, with some expected to be operational in the coming weeks. Reports suggest that Madurai will also see the introduction of electric buses. This move is part of a broader initiative to enhance public transportation across the state.

Recently, Minister S.S. Sivasankar inaugurated 32 TNSTC buses at Madurai's Mattuthavani bus stand. Other ministers, including P.D.R. and P. Murthy, attended the event. During the inauguration, Minister Sivasankar confirmed that electric buses would soon be introduced in Madurai, following their rollout in Chennai in June.

Electric Buses Coming to Chennai and Madurai

The Tamil Nadu government placed an order for around 600 low-floor electric buses with Switch Mobility, a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, in February. This order includes 500 non-AC and 100 AC low-floor electric buses. Some of these buses are expected to be deployed in Chennai and Madurai shortly.

Besides Chennai and Madurai, cities like Coimbatore are also expected to integrate electric buses into their public transport systems. The government has ordered a significant number of EiV 12 models, which are fully made in India. These buses are designed and manufactured entirely within the country.

The EiV 12 model can accommodate over 39 passengers and includes wheelchair parking for people with disabilities. It requires only two hours to charge and offers a dual-gun CCS2 charging facility. Powered by a 235kW electric motor, it can travel up to 314km on a full charge.

DriveSpark Thinks

The Tamil Nadu government's initiative to introduce these electric buses aims to reduce air pollution. Supported by the World Bank, this effort is part of a larger plan to transform Tamil Nadu into a state free from air pollution.

Efforts have already been made to convert diesel buses to CNG as part of this transformation. The introduction of electric buses marks another step towards achieving cleaner air and more sustainable public transportation in the state.
