Takuma Sato Secures Second Place For Honda In 2025 Indianapolis 500 Qualifying
Takuma Sato will lead the Honda team in the 109th Indianapolis 500, having qualified second. This marks his return to the front row since 2020, when he won the race. Sato's first victory came in 2017 from fourth place. The upcoming race will feature an all-Honda-powered second row with Scott Dixon, Felix Rosenqvist, and Alex Palou starting fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.
Honda engines power four of the top six qualifiers for this year's Indianapolis 500. Scott Dixon, a former winner in 2008, secured fourth place on the grid. Felix Rosenqvist achieved fifth position after setting the fastest lap in the Top 12 round. Reigning champion Alex Palou completes the second row by qualifying sixth.
Marcus Ericsson, who won last year's event, secured ninth place during Top 12 qualifying. He rebounded from Last Chance Qualifying to ensure his spot on the grid with his #28 Andretti Global Honda. Meanwhile, Marco Andretti qualified for his 20th Indy 500 appearance.
The Last Chance Qualifier determined the final three spots on the grid. Marcus Armstrong secured the 32nd position after his team prepared a spare car following an accident. Rinus VeeKay claimed the last spot by qualifying 33rd, bumping out teammate Jacob Abel from Dale Coyne Racing.
This year marks a significant change as it is the first time hybrid power is used in the Indy 500. The system was developed collaboratively by Honda Racing Corporation USA and Ilmor and introduced in July 2024.
