10th Gen Suzuki Alto Launch In 2026: Targets Extreme Weight Reduction To Enhance Fuel Efficiency
Suzuki's Alto, a staple in the Kei car segment in Japan since its debut in 1979, is set for a revolutionary transformation. Entering its 10th generation, the forthcoming Alto aims to redefine efficiency and performance by shedding significant weight. Scheduled for a 2026 launch, this iteration is poised to embrace cutting-edge materials and engineering techniques to achieve a notable reduction in weight.
The pursuit of a lighter Alto is not merely about shedding pounds; it's about enhancing the vehicle's overall efficiency and performance. Currently, the Alto's weight ranges between 680 kg and 760 kg, depending on the model. Suzuki's ambitious goal involves reducing this by 100 kg, targeting a new weight range of 580 kg to 660 kg. This strategic reduction is expected to bolster the car's fuel efficiency, potentially exceeding 30 km/l, and significantly lower emission levels, making the Alto more eco-friendly.
Advanced Technology & Materials
The key to achieving such a lightweight profile lies in the use of advanced high-strength steel and other lightweight materials. The new-gen Alto is set to utilize an improved version of the Heartect platform, which will extend weight reduction efforts to the engine, wheels, body panels, and even the suspension, braking, and transmission systems. The Alto has evolved significantly over its generations, gradually increasing in weight to accommodate advancements and consumer demands. For instance, the 6th-gen model weighed between 720 kg and 810 kg. However, earlier generations of the Alto were much lighter, with the 1st-gen models weighing between 530 kg to 570 kg, and the 2nd-gen models between 540 kg to 630 kg. Suzuki's new direction aims to recapture the lightness of these initial versions while embedding modern technology and amenities.
Enhancing Efficiency & Performance
The 9th-gen Alto currently on the market offers both petrol and mild-hybrid powertrains. The petrol variant houses a 658cc engine delivering 46PS and 58Nm of torque, coupled with a CVT gearbox. Meanwhile, the mild-hybrid version features a 657-cc engine and a 1.9kW Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), producing 49PS and 58Nm of torque, also mated to a CVT. Among these, the Alto mild-hybrid 2WD model stands out as the most fuel-efficient, achieving 27.7 km/l.
With the advent of the 10th-gen model, Suzuki anticipates adopting a 48V Super Ene Charge system, which is expected to further enhance the vehicle's efficiency and performance.
