SUVs Lead UK Automotive Market: Over Half Of New Models Available In 2025 Are SUVs
CarGurus has revealed that 52% of new car models available in 2025 from the UK's top 35 manufacturers are SUVs. This surge is largely driven by the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs), which now make up 33% of available SUVs. The number of SUV options has grown by 18% compared to last year and has increased by an impressive 543% since 2000.
The popularity of SUVs is evident in consumer choices. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders, eight out of the ten best-selling cars in 2025 are SUVs. Only the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Golf represent other categories. Similarly, in 2024, eight of the top ten best-sellers were also SUVs.

In 2025, UK drivers have access to a record number of new SUV models, with availability increasing by 543% since 2000. CarGurus' analysis shows there are now 193 new SUV models from the UK's top manufacturers, compared to just 30 in 2000. All these brands now offer at least one SUV model.
Among the leading brands with the most SUV options, Audi offers 18, BMW provides 15, and Mercedes has 13 different models. In contrast, less than half of these manufacturers offered an SUV back in 2000.
The rise in SUV demand has led to a decline in other body styles. MPVs have decreased by over 70%, dropping from their peak to just 22 models today. Hatchback options have also reduced by 46%, going from 100 variations to only 54 over the same period.
Chris Knapman, CarGurus UK Editorial Director, stated: "Features like the high driving position, flexible interior space, big boot, and potential off-road capability make SUVs an appealing body style to consumers." He added that this growing interest has reduced demand for other car types.
Emerging Brands Entering Market
New entrants into the UK market are also focusing on SUVs. Brands like BYD, GWM, Omoda/Jaecoo, and Leapmotor have all included at least one SUV model in their launch line-up. This trend highlights the sustained popularity and consumer preference for this vehicle type.
The CarGurus platform not only offers a wide selection of used cars but also provides guides for various body styles. These guides help users find suitable vehicles for their needs, including recommendations for the best SUVs available in 2025.
The shift towards SUVs is reflected across all major brands studied by CarGurus. Currently, all top manufacturers offer at least one SUV model, with many offering multiple variants to meet diverse consumer demands.
{TABLE_X}This table illustrates how SUV availability has evolved over time among popular UK brands. The data shows a consistent increase in SUV models from each brand since early years until now.
The continued growth of SUVs indicates a significant shift in consumer preferences towards this versatile vehicle type. As more brands introduce new models and expand their offerings, it is clear that SUVs will remain a dominant force in the automotive market for years to come.
