2 SUVs Dominate Sub-4m Segment With Almost 30% Market Share: May 2025 Sales Data Reveals Shocking Insights!
The sub 4m SUV segment in India saw a slight increase in sales in May 2025, with figures rising by 1.77% to 98,966 units compared to the previous year. However, when compared to April 2025, there was a decline of 3.77%, equating to a drop of 3,879 units. This segment remains popular due to its strong road presence and competitive pricing.
Maruti Brezza led the sales chart in May 2025 with 15,566 units sold, marking a 9.73% increase from May 2024. The Brezza has overtaken Tata Punch as the top seller over the past two months. Meanwhile, Maruti Fronx secured the second spot with a growth of 7.12%, selling 13,584 units compared to last year's figures.

Sub-Compact SUV Sales Performance
Tata Punch and its electric variant ranked third with sales of 13,133 units, though this was a decrease of 30.69% from May 2024. Conversely, Tata Nexon/EV experienced a rise in sales by 14.31%, reaching 13,096 units from last year's numbers. Kia Sonet also saw an improvement in sales by 8.35%, selling 8,054 units.
Mahindra XUV3XO faced a significant decline of 20.48% in its sales figures, while Hyundai Venue's sales dropped by 19.37%. The Exter also experienced a decrease in demand by 23.36%. Despite these declines, new models like Skoda Kylaq and Kia Syros entered the market with promising numbers.
Monthly Sales Trends
Despite annual growth for some models, monthly comparisons showed that many SUVs faced reduced demand in May compared to April. Maruti Brezza and Fronx both experienced declines in their month-on-month (MoM) sales figures by 8.28% and 5.30%, respectively.
Tata Punch/EV managed to achieve a MoM growth of 5.10%, while Tata Nexon/EV saw its sales fall by 15.27%. Kia Sonet's sales remained relatively stable with only a minor decrease of 0.17%. Mahindra XUV3XO recorded an increase in demand with MoM growth of over 5%.
Market Dynamics and New Entrants
The Hyundai Venue's sales decreased by over 5% MoM; however, Exter showed positive growth with an increase of nearly 9% from April's figures. Skoda Kylaq and Kia Syros both experienced declines in their monthly performance.
Toyota Taisor stood out with an impressive MoM increase of over 25% in May compared to April's numbers. Nissan Magnite's sales fell significantly by nearly 24% MoM while Maruti Jimny saw substantial growth at 58% . Renault Kiger rounded off the list with a 9% decline in its monthly performance for May compared to April's data.
