Stellantis Introduces STLA AutoDrive: A New Era Of Hands-Free Autonomous Driving Technology
Stellantis N.V. has introduced its first in-house automated driving system, STLA AutoDrive 1.0, which offers Hands-Free and Eyes-Off (SAE Level 3) capabilities. This system can operate at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph), even in low visibility conditions like nighttime or light rain. It aims to ease driver workload, especially in stop-and-go traffic, by allowing drivers to engage in non-driving activities.
STLA AutoDrive is part of Stellantis' broader technology strategy, which includes STLA Brain and STLA Smart Cockpit. These initiatives focus on enhancing vehicle intelligence, automation, and user experience. The system notifies drivers when conditions are suitable for its use. Once activated via a button, it manages speed, steering, and braking while maintaining safe distances.
The system's design allows for future enhancements, potentially enabling operation at speeds up to 95 km/h (59 mph) and off-road capabilities for certain models. It also supports Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) functions at higher speeds, including Adaptive Cruise Control and lane centering.
STLA AutoDrive is built on a scalable platform that can be adapted for global markets across Stellantis brands. This ensures a smooth rollout aligned with market demands. The system is cloud-connected for over-the-air updates and real-time data integration, optimizing performance continuously.
Safety remains a priority with STLA AutoDrive. It complies with regulations in supported markets and requires drivers to stay seated, belted, and ready to take control if needed. The system respects regional laws regarding driver conduct, such as phone use restrictions.
Ned Curic, Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, stated: "Helping drivers make the best use of their time is a priority." He added that by handling routine tasks, the system enhances the driving experience by making it more efficient and enjoyable.
Stellantis' Vision for the Future
Stellantis aims to provide clean, safe mobility through its diverse brand portfolio including Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge among others. The company is committed to becoming a carbon net-zero mobility tech firm by 2038 under its Dare Forward 2030 plan.
The automated driving technology uses an advanced sensor suite for high-precision awareness. This ensures reliable operation even in challenging weather conditions. An automated sensor-cleaning feature maintains optimal functionality by keeping critical components clear.
Engineers have fine-tuned STLA AutoDrive for quick reactions that feel natural in real-world scenarios. Whether maintaining safe distances or adjusting to traffic changes, the system provides a smooth driving experience that feels confident and stress-free.
The introduction of STLA AutoDrive marks Stellantis’ progress towards smarter driving experiences that are both comfortable and intuitive. Its focus on safety and adaptability highlights Stellantis' commitment to advancing vehicle automation while enhancing user satisfaction.
