Skoda & Volkswagen's Hybrid Vehicle Plans Revealed
The automotive sector is increasingly focusing on electrification due to stricter emission and fuel efficency norms. While electric vehicles are gaining traction, hybrid powertrains offer a transitional solution between internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs). Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd is considering hybrid options, with potential launches around 2028.
According to Autocar India, Skoda and Volkswagen might introduce hybrid models by 2028. The shift towards hybrid technology aligns with future compliance needs, such as the upcoming CAFE 3 norms. Hybrid systems serve as an intermediary step between ICE and fully electric powertrains. If these hybrids are Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), they could offer the advantages of both traditional and electric vehicles.
Hybrid Platform Development
SAVWIPL may develop a dedicated platform, internally named IMP21. IMP stands for India Main Platform, likely derived from China's CMP (China Main Platform). This new architecture is expected to support ICE, fully electric, and hybrid powertrains. The IMP skateboard design aims to enhance localization efforts to manage costs effectively in India's price-sensitive market.
Skoda Auto and Volkswagen's strategy involves high localization levels to meet cost constraints. This approach is crucial in a market like India, where affordability is key. The hybrid platform aligns with the company's broader long-term electrification objectives, ensuring readiness for future demands.
Expected Models and Competition
Potential hybrid models from Skoda and Volkswagen may include current offerings like the Slavia and Virtus sedans, along with Kushaq and Taigun compact SUVs. There might also be more premium models featuring hybrid powertrains above existing ones. Currently, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder are the only compact SUVs with hybrid options, while Honda City e:HEV is the sole sedan offering this technology.
The second-generation Kia Seltos and third-generation Hyundai Creta are anticipated to share a hybrid powertrain soon. Additionally, Renault-Nissan alliance plans to introduce hybrids for the Duster and its Nissan counterpart. These developments indicate growing interest in hybrid technology across various manufacturers.
