Still Sulking About Golf GTI? Skoda Octavia RS Launch Confirmed!

Skoda has confirmed the launch of the Octavia RS in India this year. Ashish Gupta, Skoda India's new brand director, stated, "The Octavia RS is something that we will definitely bring to India this year." Although no specific date was provided, it is expected to arrive by the festive season. The Octavia RS will be imported as a completely built unit (CBU) and will feature a 265hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

The anticipated price for the Octavia RS is over Rs 50 lakh. This model has already been showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January. Despite its high cost, the previous generation's 200 units sold quickly in India. The new Octavia RS shares its engine with the Volkswagen Golf GTI and has been tested on roads and tracks in Croatia.

Skoda's Focus on Local Models

While the Octavia RS launch is exciting for enthusiasts, Skoda's plans to introduce other models like the Kodiaq RS and Superb have been paused. The uncertainty surrounding Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and geopolitical factors have influenced these decisions. Gupta mentioned that despite having plans for new models in India, current market conditions make decision-making risky.

Skoda's strategy now focuses on locally produced models such as the Kylaq, which has significantly boosted their sales in India. The compact SUV averages sales of 5,000 units monthly and has helped Skoda achieve its highest-ever monthly sales of 7,422 units in March 2025. Upcoming updates for models like the Kushaq and Slavia are also planned.

Dealer Network Expansion

To reach a broader market, Skoda is expanding its dealer network and customer touchpoints across India. Gupta emphasised a structured approach to introducing global models without overwhelming the market or their resources. He stated, "Our objective is to have a portfolio that is consistent and always present."

The focus remains on maintaining consistency with existing models rather than rapidly expanding their lineup. This approach aims to ensure sustained success rather than short-term gains from introducing multiple new models simultaneously.

The decision to pause diesel model launches aligns with Skoda's current strategy of prioritising stability over rapid expansion. While diesel options like the Superb were considered for local assembly, these plans are currently shelved due to market uncertainties.

DriveSpark Thinks

While Skoda enthusiasts eagerly await the Octavia RS launch, the brand remains committed to strengthening its presence through local production and strategic planning amidst uncertain market conditions.
