Skoda & Volkswagen India Achieves Remarkable Growth In Automobile Exports

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, a collaboration between Skoda Auto from the Czech Republic and Germany's Volkswagen, is a major player in India's automobile sector. This partnership focuses on designing cars that cater to Indian conditions, leading to the recent launch of similar models from both brands. This strategy is cost-effective for both companies.

India serves as a significant manufacturing base for Skoda and Volkswagen, with many vehicles exported globally. The Mumbai Port has highlighted this export activity, noting that Skoda Auto Volkswagen India ranks among the top exporters from April 2023 to March 2024. The joint venture has shipped over 675,000 cars abroad over the years.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Sees Export Growth

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India operates two manufacturing facilities in Maharashtra. These plants have been exporting vehicles through Mumbai Port for more than two decades. The Indian government's emphasis on using domestically produced goods aligns with Skoda Auto Volkswagen India's contributions to the 'Made-in-India' initiative.

In 2023, exports of Skoda and Volkswagen cars from India increased by about 38% compared to 2022. Nearly 30% of the total production was sent overseas that year. In 2024, exports rose by another 20%, with 40% of production being exported. These statistics were provided by Mumbai Port.

Between April 2023 and March 2024, over 43,000 cars were manufactured and exported by Skoda Auto Volkswagen India. These vehicles are not only distributed across Asia but also reach markets in Africa and North America. This global distribution underscores India's role as a key manufacturing hub.

The trend of using India as a production base is not unique to Skoda Auto Volkswagen India. Many companies find it more economical to manufacture vehicles in India and export them rather than producing them elsewhere. This approach benefits from lower costs and efficient logistics.

The ongoing success of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India in exporting vehicles highlights the strategic importance of India in the global automotive industry. The country's favourable manufacturing conditions continue to attract international companies looking to optimise production and distribution.
