Skoda 100 Concept Unveiled As Retro Rear-Wheel-Drive EV

Czech carmaker Škoda has revealed the 100 Concept as part of its "Icons Get a Makeover" design programme, presenting a modern electric reinterpretation of the classic Skoda 100 sedan from the late 1960s and early 1970s, which was the firm's first car to surpass one million units.

The study explores how the original car's shape, proportions and mechanical layout could translate into a present-day EV without attempting to recreate the older model in retro form. Skoda has confirmed that the model exists only as a design exercise and has no production intentions.

The concept retains the basic four-door format of the original sedan but is reshaped using the brand's current "Modern Solid" design philosophy. The sketches released by Škoda show a smooth body profile with emphasised shoulders, a taller bonnet section and a layout that visually aligns with the footprint of a contemporary large-segment sedan in the company's global portfolio.

The Skoda 100 Concept project was led by the firm's designer Martin Paclt, who describes the study as an interpretation that takes cues from the classic model while applying the brand's modern design language.

At the front, the Škoda 100 Concept uses a full-width fascia treatment in place of a conventional grille. The front carries integrated Škoda script and a distinctive quad-headlamp arrangement that references the styling of the original 100.

The lighting elements are arranged to form a symmetrical pattern across the nose, supported by a bumper design shaped to channel airflow around the corners of the car. This layout marks a shift away from the upright grille design used on many current SKoda production models.

The rear of the Skoda 100 Concept features a smooth tail section that replaces the original model's rear window layout. The design incorporates a roof-mounted air intake positioned above the rear windscreen area, an element used to route additional cooling air toward the electric drivetrain imagined for the concept.

The rear design of the Skoda 100 Concept omits the slatted vents seen on the original model, instead presenting a clean panel with structured surfaces and a minimalist lighting signature.

Škoda states that the mechanical layout chosen for the study imagines a rear-mounted electric motor powering the rear wheels. This arrangement directly echoes the rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration of the original Škoda 100 but translates it into an electric format suited to a modern platform.

No drivetrain specifications, output figures or battery details have been published, as the study focuses solely on visual design and conceptual layout rather than production-ready engineering work.

The Skoda 100 Concept forms part of a wider internal project in which designers revisit the company's past models to explore how their identities can be carried forward using present-day design tools.

The Icons Get a Makeover initiative has been used to examine several earlier Škoda vehicles, with each model reinterpreted to highlight key historical elements without recreating original features. The company uses these studies to experiment with new shapes, proportions and signature elements under its current styling framework.
