Indian Government's Sahkar Taxi To Boost Driver Benefits With 0% Commission
The Indian government has unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce "Sahkar Taxi," a new player in the transport service sector, aiming to compete with established services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The initiative, as disclosed by Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah in the Parliament, seeks to encompass a wide range of vehicles including bike, cab, and auto rides.
Shah highlighted that "Sahkar Taxi will register two-wheeler taxis, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheeler taxis across the country," emphasizing the direct benefit to drivers by enabling them to retain full earnings without the need to share profits with larger corporations.

Shah's announcement underlined the government's commitment to ensuring that "profits from this service will not go to any big industrialist but will go solely to the drivers of the vehicles," marking a significant shift from the operational models of current ride-hailing platforms. This initiative not only promises to enhance the earnings of individual drivers but also envisages the creation of the country's largest private-sector insurance company within the cooperative system. This cooperative insurance company will serve to provide insurance services, bolstering the framework of the Sahkar Taxi service.
The Sahkar Taxi concept is set apart by its focus on the welfare of its drivers, ensuring they receive the entirety of their earnings, a stark contrast to the profit-sharing models of its competitors. This approach is aimed at providing a more equitable and financially beneficial structure for drivers, while also offering affordable transportation options for passengers. The government's plans also include the establishment of a cooperative insurance company to further support drivers within this ecosystem.
Reflecting on similar initiatives, it's noteworthy that the "Yatri Sathi" service in West Bengal and the "Kerala Savaari" in Kerala have laid the groundwork for such models. Kerala's endeavor, particularly, is in the process of being revitalized with improved fares and technology, indicating a growing trend toward more driver-friendly transport services across the country.
As Sahkar Taxi gears up for its nationwide rollout in the coming months, the anticipation for a service that prioritizes the needs of both drivers and passengers is palpable. This move represents a significant step towards redefining the landscape of India's transport services, characterized by a more inclusive, fair, and cooperative approach. The foundation of a cooperative insurance company alongside promises a comprehensive support system for drivers, making Sahkar Taxi a noteworthy development in India's transport sector.
