Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Features Historic Formula 1 Cars For 75th Anniversary Celebration
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is set to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Formula 1 with a remarkable display of historic F1 cars. This event, part of the renowned Monterey Car Week, will take place at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca from August 13-16. The exhibition is curated by Ellen Bireley, known for her work with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum.
Attendees can expect an exciting weekend featuring over 400 cars racing in 14 groups. A highlight will be the dedicated race showcasing historic F1 cars from 1966 to 1985. Visitors will have the opportunity to see more than two dozen legendary Formula 1 vehicles up close.
The Vanwall VW5/11 is among the first confirmed cars for the event. This British racing car was pivotal in Vanwall's success during the late 1950s. Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks drove it to several victories, contributing to Vanwall's win in the Formula One Constructors’ World Championship.
Another notable car is the 1966 Eagle Mk 1 Climax Chassis 101. Campaigned by All American Racers, it achieved respectable finishes under Dan Gurney's guidance. Phil Hill and Bob Bondurant also raced this car, which later became notable for Al Pease's unique Grand Prix disqualification.
The Lotus Type 49 R2/R11 holds a storied place in motorsport history. Jim Clark drove it to victory at Zandvoort in its debut race and achieved wins at Silverstone and Watkins Glen. At Monza, Clark delivered a memorable performance despite setbacks, showcasing his exceptional skill.
