Realising A Lifelong Dream With The Unique Bentley Speed Six Continuation Series
The third Speed Six Continuation Series car has been delivered to its owner. Crafted by hand at Mulliner's workshops, this vehicle took eight months to complete. The design was inspired by a childhood toy, making it deeply personal for the owner and family. The car features a unique green finish named 'Embelo,' honouring the owner's daughters.
The owner's collection includes several Bentleys, such as a first-generation Continental GT and a rare GT3R. The garage also houses a Supersports and Bentayga, alongside the Continuation Series Blower. The handover ceremony occurred at Cliveden House in Berkshire.
The Speed Six Continuation Series #3 mirrors the original 1930s racer but includes custom features. It carries racing number 3, significant to the owner due to his rugby background. Both the Blower and Speed Six share this number and are painted in 'Embelo Green,' a shade between light green and British Racing Green.
The interior of the Speed Six is upholstered in red, echoing the owner's model Bentley but in a more subdued tone. To accommodate different driving conditions, two exhaust systems were requested: one unsilenced like the original and another with a silencer for noise-restricted circuits.
Bentley Mulliner engineering developed a special silencer for the Speed Six Continuation series. Additional details include a white patch on the front fender for pit identification and a hand-painted Union Flag on the driver's side.
Commissioning such a car is highly personal. The owner of Speed Six #3 frequently visited Crewe workshops during its creation. A skilled craftsman himself, he even helped fit fabric on his Blower's bodywork but couldn't do so for his Speed Six due to work commitments.
Historical Significance
The Speed Six debuted in 1928 as a sportier version of Bentley's 6½ Litre model. It featured enhanced power through twin SU carburettors, higher compression, and an advanced camshaft. Between 1928 and 1930, 182 units were produced.
This model secured its place in history with Le Mans victories in 1929 and 1930. For the Continuation Series, Mulliner Classic used two original Speed Sixes as templates: their own GU409 and 'Old Number 3,' which raced at Le Mans in 1930.
Legacy of Craftsmanship
'Old Number 3' was loaned by its owner to provide essential data on dimensions and materials for the project. The W.O. Bentley Memorial Foundation also contributed significantly by supplying 80% of original drawings used by Mulliner Classic.
The owner plans to drive his new Speed Six regularly, fulfilling W.O. Bentley's vision of speed, reliability, and performance. This hands-on approach reflects Mulliner's dedication to realising customer dreams through meticulous craftsmanship.
