Porsche Penske Motorsport Celebrates One-Two Finish At The 12 Hours Of Sebring
Porsche achieved a remarkable feat by securing the top two positions in the second round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Brazilian Felipe Nasr, Nick Tandy from Great Britain, and Belgium's Laurens Vanthoor triumphed at the 12 Hours of Sebring with their No. 7 Porsche 963. This victory follows their earlier success at the 24 Hours of Daytona in January.
In the GTD Pro class, AO Racing celebrated its first endurance race win in the IMSA series with the Porsche 911 GT3 R, known as "Rexy." The team comprised Laurin Heinrich from Germany, Klaus Bachler from Austria, and Belgian Alessio Picariello. They delivered a flawless performance to secure victory by 4.371 seconds.
The Porsche Penske Motorsport team showcased an outstanding performance with Matt Campbell from Australia and Frenchmen Mathieu Jaminet and Kévin Estre finishing second. Their efforts contributed to Porsche's extended lead in the manufacturers' championship, while both driver crews now occupy the top two spots in the drivers' championship standings.
Felipe Nasr took an early lead just 15 minutes into the race after starting third. Despite losing their lead an hour later, Nasr and his teammates regained it in the evening under challenging conditions at Sebring International Raceway. The decisive moment came after a full course caution when Nasr held off rivals during a thrilling final sprint.
Proton Competition finished sixth overall, while JDC-Miller MotorSports secured eighth place with their hybrid prototype. Nico Müller made his debut in the Porsche 963 for Proton Competition, delivering strong performances despite some setbacks during the race.
The Wright Motorsports team faced challenges despite having competitive pace in the GTD class. Penalties during pit stops hindered their progress, resulting in a fifth-place finish for Adam Adelson, Eliott Skeer, and Tom Sargent in their Porsche 911 GT3 R.
Driver Reactions
Nick Tandy expressed his delight: "It feels amazing to win two races in a row. But winning the 36 Hours of Florida in Daytona and Sebring is hard to believe." Matt Campbell added: "The one-two finish is obviously a banner result for Porsche Penske Motorsport." Nico Müller shared his excitement about driving the Porsche 963: "What a fantastic weekend! I had great fun with the team."
Klaus Bachler praised his teammates: "I’m so proud of the team! Laurin did an exceptional job in the last two hours of the race." Adam Adelson reflected on their performance: "We’re championship oriented, so we wanted to do anything we could to maximize that."
Upcoming Challenges
The next event is set for April 11-12 at Long Beach, California. This street race offers a stark contrast to previous endurance events with its shorter 100-minute format. Teams will need to adapt quickly to this different style of racing as they continue their pursuit of championship success.
Porsche's triumph at Sebring marks its 19th overall victory at this endurance classic since its last win in 2008. This achievement further solidifies Porsche's reputation as a dominant force in motorsport history.
