Porsche Penske Motorsport Targets 20th Victory At The 24 Hours Of Daytona In New IMSA Season
Porsche is gearing up for the 24 Hours of Daytona, aiming for a 20th overall victory. The event, marking its 63rd edition, will take place on January 25-26 at Daytona International Speedway in Florida. Porsche Penske Motorsport enters as defending champions with updated driver lineups for their two Porsche 963 entries. Customer teams JDC-Miller MotorSports and Proton Competition will also field identical hybrid prototypes in the premier GTP class.
Pascal Wehrlein, the Formula E World Champion from Germany, will debut in the Porsche 963 with JDC-Miller MotorSports. The "Roar Before the 24" test session last weekend allowed teams to prepare intensively. Over three days, the four Porsche 963s in the GTP class completed 636 laps (2,264 miles), while four Porsche 911 GT3 R cars covered over 2,400 miles in the GT categories.
Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, stated: "Daytona was the springboard for many successes last year. The competition will be even tougher in 2025, but our ambitions remain undiminished." In 2024, the No. 7 Porsche 963 triumphed at this iconic race. This year’s goal is another overall victory with strong preparation for fierce competition.
The No. 6 car will feature Mathieu Jaminet and Matt Campbell throughout the season, with Kévin Estre joining them at Daytona. The No. 7 car will see Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy joined by Laurens Vanthoor for this race. Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Motorsport LMDh, noted that consistent progress during testing has fully prepared them for the season's first race week.
Jonathan Diuguid, Managing Director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, expressed optimism: "We are entering this year’s race exceptionally well prepared." He acknowledged minor technical issues during tests but remained confident heading into the race weekend.
Focus on Customer Teams
The customer teams also draw attention with their entries. Proton Competition's No. 5 car includes Julien Andlauer and Neel Jani among its drivers. Meanwhile, Pascal Wehrlein shares driving duties in JDC-Miller MotorSports' No. 85 car with Gianmaria Bruni and others.
In GTD-Pro category racing, AO Racing’s "Rexy" aims to defend its IMSA title with Laurin Heinrich and Klaus Bachler among its drivers. Proton Competition fields a similar car driven by Thomas Preining and Richard Lietz alongside Matteo Cressoni and Claudio Schiavoni.
Iron Dames and Other GTD Class Entries
The Iron Dames debut their Porsche 911 GT3 R in IMSA series competition this year under a new partnership supporting women in motorsport launched late last year. Michelle Gatting leads their lineup alongside Sarah Bovy and others aiming for success.
Wright Motorsports features Ayhancan Güven among its drivers along with Tom Sargent and Elliott Skeer who already tasted victory at Daytona during Roar weekend sprint races.
The Race Course
The Daytona International Speedway is known for its steeply banked turns reaching angles up to 31 degrees along its unique layout combining an oval track with an infield road course spanning over three-and-a-half miles long since opening back in '59.
Porsche holds an impressive record here as both constructor (19 wins) & engine partner (four wins). Additionally boasting another eighty class victories making them most successful manufacturer historically speaking when it comes down specifically towards this particular endurance event held
