The start of the fifth IMSA round on Detroit's street course posed challenges due to changing conditions. After a hot practice day, temperatures dropped to 60 degrees Fahrenheit for the race. Initially, both Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 cars adapted well. Nick Tandy quickly moved the No. 7 car from seventh to third by lap four.

During the first pit stop around the 40-minute mark, Porsche Penske Motorsport's crew excelled, sending both cars back onto the track faster than competitors. At halfway through the race, the No. 7 car led while No. 6 was battling for a podium spot in fourth place.

With just 15 minutes remaining, Nasr lost two positions during a spirited battle for the lead but allowed the No. 6 car to move up to third. Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Racing LMDh, expressed satisfaction with their performance: "After a strong start, we were able to take the lead and control the race for long stretches."

Jonathan Diuguid, Managing Director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, added: "Our strategy and pit stops were excellent... Still, it was a good day overall." Despite tire issues affecting grip towards the end of the race, they extended their championship lead slightly.

Upcoming Challenges

Porsche holds a significant lead of 147 points over its closest rival in manufacturers' standings. Nasr/Tandy and Campbell/Jaminet rank first and second in drivers' standings while Porsche Penske Motorsport leads IMSA team standings.

Meanwhile, JDC-Miller MotorSports faced difficulties with their yellow No. 85 Porsche 963 driven by Gianmaria Bruni from Italy and Tijmen van der Helm from Netherlands finishing eleventh after incurring penalties.

Driver Insights

Matt Campbell commented on their podium finish: "What a crazy race! Our goal was to finish on the podium – and we did it." Felipe Nasr noted how they advanced due to smart strategy but faced challenges after caution periods affected tire performance.

Tijmen van der Helm reflected on their weekend struggles compared to factory cars but acknowledged improvements during races despite penalties impacting results significantly.

Looking Ahead

The next round of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will be held at Watkins Glen International on June 21st following crucial test days at Le Mans scheduled between June 14th-15th where three Porsche 963s will compete.

Laurin Heinrich shared his experience driving clean laps despite not having fastest car this weekend; however chaos ensued during final laps resulting in spins yet securing fifth place proved important for championship standings.
