Porsche Expands The 911 Model Lineup With Three New All-Wheel Drive Variants Featuring Enhanced Performance
Porsche is set to enhance its 911 lineup for the 2026 model year by introducing three new all-wheel drive models: the 911 Carrera 4S coupe, Cabriolet, and Targa 4S. These models will feature increased power, improved standard equipment, and better brakes compared to their predecessors. With these additions, Porsche's all-wheel drive offerings in the 911 range will expand to six variants.
The new models are designed to fill the gap between the standard 911 Carrera and the more powerful GTS versions. The Carrera 4S is available as both a coupe and a Cabriolet, while the Targa 4S offers a unique blend of convertible enjoyment with coupe comfort. These options cater to diverse customer preferences within the 911 series.
All three models incorporate the upgraded engine from the Carrera S. This engine is a 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder boxer that delivers 473 hp (353 kW) and 390 lb.-ft. of torque, which is an increase of 30 hp (22 kW) over previous versions. The enhanced performance is partly due to optimized intercooling inspired by the 911 Turbo.
An eight-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK) distributes power to all four wheels. The Carrera 4S coupe can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds when equipped with Launch Control and the optional Sport Chrono Package, reaching a top speed of 191 mph.
The standard equipment for these new models has been significantly improved. Performance enhancements include a Sport Exhaust system with silver tailpipes and brakes sourced from previous generation GTS models, measuring 408 mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear. Additionally, upgraded dampers with optimized hydraulics enhance ride quality.
Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) remains a standard feature, along with staggered Carrera S wheels measuring 20/21 inches. Optional features include Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) and PASM Sport Suspension, which lowers ride height by 10 mm. Rear axle steering is available on both Carrera 4S variants for added agility at low speeds and stability at high speeds.
Interior Features
Inside, these models boast extended leather upholstery as standard on seats, headrests, upper dashboard, upper door panels, and rear seats if equipped. Matrix Design LED headlights and wireless smartphone charging are also included as standard features across these variants.
The new models are expected to arrive at U.S. Porsche Centers in late 2025. Pricing details will be announced closer to their release date.
The Legacy of the Targa
For six decades, the Porsche Targa has combined convertible fun with coupe comfort. Introduced in September 1965 at Frankfurt's IAA show, its design was inspired by motorsport with a removable roof and folding rear window for open-air driving while maintaining structural integrity through its wide Targa bar.
Named after Sicily's famous Targa Florio race, today's Targa remains iconic with technical advancements over time. Since its introduction in the early '90s with automatic roof mechanisms eliminating manual removal needs; since '06 exclusively featuring all-wheel drive; current designs launched in '14 offer fully automated roof operations taking just nineteen seconds—reflecting early model styles yet modernized for today’s drivers seeking nostalgia alongside innovation.
The current Targa roof module comes in four colour options: black, blue, red or brown—allowing personalisation while retaining classic aesthetics reminiscent of original designs that continue captivating enthusiasts worldwide today!
