Petersen Automotive Museum Unveils Exhibit Celebrating 50 Years Of BMW 3 Series
The Petersen Automotive Museum has unveiled "The Ultimate Racing Machine" exhibition, celebrating 50 years of the BMW 3 Series. This display, located in the museum's Vault, showcases the evolution of this iconic model across seven generations. It highlights its influence on motorsport and BMW's heritage. The exhibit also features M3-derived M4 models that continue the brand's legacy.
"We are excited to celebrate 50 years of BMW 3 Series in partnership with the Petersen Automotive Museum with this special exhibit," stated Thomas Plucinsky, Head of BMW Group Classic USA. "The original BMW 3 Series and now the BMW 3 Series and its 'fraternal twins' the 4 Series are the core of the BMW brand. 'The Ultimate Racing Machine' exhibit brings together seven of the most successful and important race cars— one from each generation combined with a couple of wonderfully preserved street examples including one of the three remaining, V-8 powered, M3 GTR Straßenversion."
The exhibition includes notable models such as the 1978 BMW 320i Group 5 and the 1983 BMW 320i. Visitors can also see the 1990 BMW M3 Group A DTM and GTM versions, along with the 1996 BMW M3 GT2. The display continues with more recent models like the 2001 BMW M3 GTR and its street version, as well as newer entries like the 2020 BMW M4 DTM Class 1.
Located at 6060 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, California, this exhibition is part of a collaboration between Petersen Automotive Museum and BMW. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering general admission for $21. An additional charge of $28 applies for Vault tickets.
The display not only celebrates past achievements but also looks forward with models like the upcoming 2024 BMW M4 GT4 EVO. This collection underscores how these vehicles have shaped both motorsport and consumer perceptions over decades.
The Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation operates as a non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving automotive history. Admission prices vary by age group, with discounts available for seniors and youth. Active military personnel and children under four enjoy free entry.
