Innovative Packaging Strategy Enhances Performance Of The Bugatti Tourbillon Hypercar
The Bugatti Tourbillon represents a significant evolution in hypercar design, where every element is meticulously crafted to enhance overall performance. The Tourbillon's design features a new V16 engine, which is longer and narrower than its predecessor, the W16. This engine is mounted at an angle, allowing for extended Venturi tunnels beneath the car. These tunnels are crucial for generating downforce without relying on wings, enabling the car to achieve high speeds with reduced drag. The innovative powertrain layout supports this aerodynamic efficiency.
In a departure from traditional designs, the gearbox in the Tourbillon is positioned behind the engine rather than in front. This change allows for independent power to the front axle via dual electric motors, eliminating any mechanical link between the engine and front wheels. A compact battery sits between these motors, optimizing weight distribution and packaging efficiency.
The redesign also reduces the frontal area, a critical factor for hypercars aiming to exceed speed benchmarks set by models like the Chiron. "People sometimes forget that total dynamic resistance of a car is the drag coefficient times the frontal area," said Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac. This reduction was essential for achieving higher speeds.
At the front of the Tourbillon, aerodynamics and thermodynamics converge around Bugatti's iconic horseshoe grille. This feature serves as more than just a design element; it facilitates cooling by directing air past various components such as the electric axle, battery, and brake system. Cooling for the combustion engine occurs beside this grille.
The rear of the hypercar showcases Bugatti's integration philosophy through its diffuser design. Unlike conventional vehicles with solid crash beams, the Tourbillon incorporates 3D-printed metal structures within its diffuser to absorb crash energy effectively. This approach exemplifies Bugatti's commitment to innovation and safety.
Advanced Suspension Design
A distinctive aspect of the Tourbillon's packaging is its suspension system. Airfoil-shaped components are partially exposed to airflow to maintain aerodynamic efficiency. Traditional parts would disrupt airflow; however, Bugatti employs 3D printing and AI-driven optimization to create strong yet aerodynamic wishbones.
Software and AI play a crucial role in refining Bugatti's components by removing unnecessary material atom by atom. In areas like upper suspension parts, this results in organic microstructures designed for maximum strength with minimal weight. Such advancements highlight Bugatti's dedication to pushing boundaries in automotive design.
