Revealing a comprehensive plan to overhaul India's transport framework, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced a series of innovative strategies intended to modernize the sector significantly. Gadkari's vision encompasses a wide array of initiatives including the introduction of electric buses with airplane-like amenities, the development of hyperloop systems, and the establishment of ropeways and cable cars to enhance connectivity in challenging terrains.
With an eye on fostering sustainable and efficient transportation, Gadkari revealed in an interview with PTI that the transformation is well underway. Central to this transformation is the shift towards greener alternatives such as flex-fuel engines—a move supported by 11 leading automakers.
Flex-fuel vehicles, capable of operating on a blend of ethanol, methanol, and traditional fuels, are poised to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and cut down fuel imports. Gadkari's initiatives underscore a concerted effort to minimize environmental impact while boosting the economy.
"We are driving innovation. A revolution in mass mobility is underway," Gadkari affirmed, highlighting the scale of work being done to revolutionize how India travels. Gadkari's strategy also involves substantial upgrades to existing infrastructure, with a target to enhance 25,000 km of two-lane highways to four lanes.
This expansion aims to facilitate smoother travel and cargo movement, thereby stimulating economic growth and job creation. Coupled with this is the ambitious plan to escalate road construction to 100 km per day, which the Minister claims is not a goal but a target.
Revolutionizing Transport with Electric and Flex-Fuel Vehicles
A significant component of Gadkari's roadmap is the focus on electric and flex-fuel vehicles. Highlighting the collaboration with major automotive companies, he said, "Eleven companies, including Tata, Toyota, Hyundai, and Mahindra, have agreed to build flex-fuel engine vehicles." This move is expected to considerably diminish India's dependence on fuel imports and fossil fuel consumption as these flex fuel vehicles can run on both conventional petrol or diesel as well as biofuels and ethanol mixes.
On the electric front, a pilot project for a 135-seater electric bus in Nagpur has been launched. This bus, capable of recharging in just 30-40 minutes, offers a greener, cost-effective alternative to traditional diesel buses, with drastically lower emissions. Plans to expand the electric bus network to various routes across India reflect the ministry's broader aim of introducing green mobility solutions on a national scale.
Furthermore, the minister shed light on pilot projects involving Metrino pod taxis and pillar-based rapid transport systems earmarked for cities like Delhi and Bengaluru. These projects are expected to draw significant technological and financial investments, signaling a major leap towards futuristic urban mobility.
Gadkari's initiatives are not limited to urban areas; they extend to enhancing mobility in remote regions through the construction of ropeways, cable cars, and funicular railways. Over 360 locations, including Kedarnath, have been identified for these projects, with work already beginning in 60 of them. These transportation modes are especially suited for mountainous and hilly terrains, promising to alter the very landscape of travel in such regions.
The transport sector's contribution to air pollution in India is nearly 40 per cent, a figure Gadkari aims to drastically reduce through his green mobility initiatives. Alongside environmental benefits, these initiatives are expected to significantly slash India's hefty annual fuel import bill. By the end of the year, the improved road infrastructure is anticipated to lower logistics costs from 14 per cent of GDP to 9 per cent, thereby boosting the nation's economic efficiency.
