Nissan Donates $250,000 To Mississippi HBCUs To Enhance STEM Education And Workforce Development

By

Nissan has announced a $250,000 donation to seven Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Mississippi to support STEM education. This marks the 11th year of Nissan's commitment to funding these institutions. Since the launch of the Mississippi HBCU STEM Initiative in 2014, Nissan has invested $2.75 million to enhance STEM programs, aiming to boost technology awareness and workforce development.

Victor Taylor, vice president at Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant, expressed pride in contributing to the future of STEM at Mississippi HBCUs. He noted that many leaders and staff at the Canton facility are graduates of these institutions. Taylor stated, "Nissan’s Canton facility counts dozens of Mississippi HBCU graduates among its leadership and staff." This ongoing investment aims to prepare students for careers in industries like automotive.

Nissan Supports HBCUs with STEM Funding

The seven HBCUs benefiting from Nissan's donation include Alcorn State University, Coahoma Community College, Hinds Community College - Utica Campus, Jackson State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Rust College, and Tougaloo College. These funds will support various projects designed to enhance student engagement and learning in STEM fields.

Coahoma Community College will use the funds for its CsTEm Camp, which introduces high school students to vocational careers in STEM through interactive activities. Jackson State University's initiatives focus on student engagement through senior design projects and robotics competitions. Mississippi Valley State University's program aims to improve job readiness and student learning with technology upgrades and internship placements.

The skills taught in these STEM programs are crucial for building advanced vehicles at Nissan's Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant. The plant produces models like the Nissan Frontier and Altima with precision and innovation fostered through STEM education.

Nissan Canton's Impact

Since opening in 2003, the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant has been pivotal in Mississippi's economic development. It was the first automotive manufacturing facility in the state and has created over 25,000 jobs statewide. The plant employs more than 5,000 people and contributes significantly to local communities through donations exceeding $20 million and over 12,000 volunteer hours.

Nissan Canton is undergoing a transformation into a hub for electric vehicle manufacturing in the U.S., aiming to introduce new all-electric models to the market. This evolution builds on its history of producing award-winning vehicles while supporting local economic growth.

The continued investment by Nissan not only supports educational initiatives but also strengthens community ties by preparing students for future careers. By fostering talent through education, Nissan helps ensure a skilled workforce ready for technological advancements.
