Nissan Unveils All-New LEAF Electric Car Built At Sunderland Plant With 375-Mile Range

Nissan has introduced the latest version of its LEAF electric vehicle, which will soon be produced in Sunderland, the largest car manufacturing facility in the UK. This third-generation model is part of Nissan's EV36Zero initiative, aimed at advancing electric vehicle production. The Sunderland plant employs 6,000 workers who will assemble this new model.

The LEAF has been tailored to meet European preferences at Nissan's research centre in Cranfield, Bedfordshire. It will feature batteries from AESC, a gigafactory located next to the Sunderland plant. The new LEAF can travel up to 375 miles on a single charge and will be available for purchase later this year.

Nissan's electrification plans extend beyond the LEAF. The upcoming Qashqai e-POWER is set to launch soon, followed by an all-electric Juke next year. Additionally, a fully electric Micra designed in London will be released later this year. By 2026, Nissan aims to introduce a smaller city car, ensuring a comprehensive range of electric vehicles for diverse customer needs.

Alan Johnson, Senior Vice President of Manufacturing & Supply Chain Management at Nissan Motor Manufacturing, expressed pride in unveiling the third-generation LEAF. He stated: "It’s with immense pride that we unveil the third-generation of our pioneering electric LEAF, twelve years after we brought EV and battery manufacturing to the UK."

Nissan's EV36Zero project envisions transforming Sunderland into a leading hub for electric vehicles by integrating renewable energy and battery production. This initiative aligns with Nissan's broader goal of becoming a sustainable company and promoting a cleaner future.

James Taylor, managing director of Nissan GB, highlighted the significance of the new LEAF: "We’re really excited about the launch of the all-new LEAF later this year. It builds on the success of the previous two generations, which have found homes with more than 70,000 UK customers."

Nissan employs approximately 7,000 people across various locations in the UK, including its design centre in London and R&D engineering centre in Cranfield. The Sunderland plant currently produces popular models like Juke and Qashqai and will soon add the European version of the new LEAF to its lineup.

The introduction of these new models underscores Nissan's commitment to expanding its electric vehicle offerings while supporting local manufacturing efforts in Britain.
