Nissan Formula E Team Gears Up For Historic Double-Header At Monaco Circuit
The Nissan Formula E Team is gearing up for a historic double-header at the iconic Circuit de Monaco. This event marks Rounds 6 and 7 of the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Known for its challenging layout, the 3.337-kilometre track includes famous sections like the Grand Hotel Hairpin and La Rascasse. Despite its reputation, recent races have seen numerous overtakes, with 197 passes in 2024.
Oliver Rowland leads the Drivers’ Standings after securing three podiums, including two wins in the first five rounds. Meanwhile, Norman Nato achieved his first Formula E pole position in Florida but finished sixth due to a post-race penalty. Nato, born in Cannes, sees Monaco as a home race and aims to perform well there.
Nissan currently tops the Manufacturers’ Championship and holds second place in the Teams’ Standings. The team will begin their on-track activities at 07:30 (UTC+2) on Saturday with Free Practice. Qualifying sessions are scheduled for 10:40 on both days, followed by races starting at 15:00.
Tommaso Volpe, managing director and team principal of Nissan Formula E Team, expressed excitement about competing in Monaco. He stated, "Scoring points with both cars in Miami was positive, and to see Norman take his maiden Formula E pole position was a great moment." He emphasised the importance of preparation due to limited time between sessions.
Oliver Rowland highlighted the significance of racing in Monaco, saying it's special due to its history in motorsport. He noted that qualifying would be crucial on Saturday because overtaking might be difficult with Pit Boost playing a role. However, Sunday could see more overtaking if it turns into a peloton-style race.
Norman Nato reflected on his experience in Miami and shared his enthusiasm for racing in Monaco. "Miami was a great event," he said. "Monaco is very special to me as I have so many amazing memories in the Principality." He acknowledged that early starts and limited adjustment time would make it physically and mentally demanding.
Insights from Reserve Driver
Sérgio Sette Câmara, reserve and simulator driver for Nissan Formula E Team, described Monaco as one of the world's most challenging circuits. He explained that even small mistakes can have significant consequences but praised its unique nature. Câmara mentioned that having raced there before helps when making set-up changes during simulations.
Nissan's Commitment to Electric Racing
Nissan entered Formula E in Season 5 (2018/19), becoming Japan's first manufacturer in the series. In Season 7 (2020/21), they committed long-term to the GEN3 era until Season 12 (2025/26). In April 2022, they acquired e.dams race team ownership and announced supplying McLaren Racing with EV powertrain technology throughout GEN3.
In March 2024, Nissan reaffirmed its commitment by signing up for GEN4 until 2030 ahead of Tokyo E-Prix. This aligns with their Ambition 2030 electrification targets aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 through electrifying all-new vehicles by early 2030s.
Formula E's Environmental Impact
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship achieved net-zero carbon status from inception in 2020 by investing in climate-protecting projects across race markets to offset emissions each season. The championship showcases electric technology advancements while promoting sustainable mobility within city centres to combat air pollution and climate change effects.
