Nissan Formula E Team Targets Championship Lead At Shanghai Double-Header This Weekend
Nissan Formula E Team is gearing up for the Shanghai International Circuit, hosting Rounds 10 and 11 of the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Oliver Rowland aims to build on his recent victory in Tokyo, while Norman Nato seeks to replicate his previous podium finish in Shanghai. Nissan currently leads all three championship categories, having reclaimed the top position in Tokyo.
The Shanghai circuit, featuring 12 corners, includes a challenging first corner that tightens into a complex series of turns. Heavy braking zones at Turns 6 and 10 offer prime overtaking opportunities. The track has been resurfaced, promising high grip levels and potentially leading to peloton-style racing with strategic energy management being crucial.
Tommaso Volpe, managing director of Nissan Formula E Team, expressed pride in the team's performance under challenging conditions in Tokyo. "We arrive in China leading all three championships thanks to the tremendous work that the team did in Tokyo," he stated. The team's main goals are to consolidate Rowland's lead and strengthen their position in the Teams' and Manufacturers' Championships.
Oliver Rowland is excited about the strategic elements introduced by Pit Boost races. "The victory in Tokyo was very special and, overall, it was a great weekend for us," he said. He anticipates an exciting race due to the wide track and expects overtaking to be easier, focusing on energy management for a strong finish.
Norman Nato looks forward to another successful outing in Shanghai after last season's podium finish. "I enjoyed the first-ever weekend in Shanghai last season," he remarked. He acknowledges that changes like Pit Boost and four-wheel drive Attack Mode will make this year's race different but remains confident due to their strong performance on permanent tracks this season.
Sérgio Sette Câmara, reserve driver for Nissan Formula E Team, believes Shanghai's wide track will provide ample overtaking opportunities. He noted that energy saving will be crucial for success. The resurfaced circuit should allow cars to go faster than before, enhancing the spectacle for fans.
Nissan's Commitment to Formula E
Nissan entered Formula E in Season 5 (2018/19) as the first Japanese manufacturer in the series. They committed long-term to GEN3 era racing from Season 9 (2022/23) through Season 12 (2025/26). In April 2022, Nissan acquired e.dams race team ownership and announced supplying EV powertrain technology to McLaren Racing during GEN3.
In March 2024, Nissan reaffirmed its commitment by signing up for GEN4 era racing until 2030. This aligns with their Ambition 2030 electrification targets. Nissan aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and plans to electrify all new vehicles by early 2030s in key markets.
Formula E's Environmental Impact
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship achieved net zero carbon footprint certification from inception in 2020 by investing in climate-protecting projects globally. All cars are electric-powered, providing a platform for testing cutting-edge electric technology while promoting sustainable mobility to combat air pollution and climate change effects.
The championship features top manufacturers competing on street circuits worldwide. It encourages adopting sustainable practices within city centers as part of its mission to reduce environmental impact through innovative electric vehicle technology development.
