Nissan To Expand Powertrain Options In India With Hybrid & CNG Variants

Nissan is gearing up to expand its powertrain options in India, with plans to introduce hybrid and CNG variants for the Magnite SUV. The company is also considering launching its first electric vehicle (EV) in the country by the end of FY26. However, it remains uncertain if these new powertrains will be added to the existing Magnite lineup or introduced as separate models.

Frank Torres, President of Nissan India Operations, confirmed that the company's previously announced plans are progressing well. These include launching two mid-size SUVs and an electric SUV. The mid-size SUVs will feature both five-seater and seven-seater configurations. Torres mentioned that Nissan is exploring additional strategies to boost growth in the near future.

Nissan's Ambitious Sales Goals For FY26

Nissan aims to significantly increase its sales in India by FY26, targeting a threefold growth. The automaker plans to achieve domestic sales and exports of one lakh units each per year. This expansion will involve introducing more powertrains and potentially new models during this period.

India has become a crucial export hub for Nissan, especially with the launch of the left-hand drive version of the Magnite SUV. The company has begun shipping 10,000 units of this model to various global markets. Previously exporting to 20 countries, Nissan now plans to reach 65 countries with these shipments.

Global Export Strategy & New Markets

The company intends to export 2,000 units of the left-hand drive Magnite to regions like the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia Pacific. Additionally, over 5,100 units will be sent to select Latin American markets such as Mexico. By February 2025, Nissan aims for an overall shipment of over 10,000 units.

Torres emphasised that India's role as a global export hub is expanding rapidly. "India is moving as one of the global export hubs for Nissan...With the start of exports of the left-hand drive version of the Magnite, we will be exporting to a total of 65 countries now," he stated.

Impact Of Potential Honda-Nissan Merger

Regarding potential global developments involving a merger between Nissan and Honda, Torres assured that this would not impact Nissan's product plans in India. He reiterated that discussions are at an early stage globally and emphasised India's importance as a growing market where positive outcomes are anticipated.

Nissan continues its commitment towards operations in India despite any potential mergers at a global level. The company sees India as a promising market due to its rapid growth rate and remains dedicated to serving its partners and customers there.
