Nigel Mansell To Celebrate 75 Years Of Formula 1 At Goodwood Festival Of Speed
The Festival of Speed, presented by Mastercard, is marking 75 years of the Formula 1 World Championship. Nigel Mansell, the 1992 Formula 1 World Champion, will drive his iconic Williams FW11 and FW14B cars. The event is scheduled from Thursday, 10 July to Sunday, 13 July. Limited tickets for Thursday are available at goodwood.com.
Goodwood is excited to announce that Nigel Mansell will return to this year's Festival of Speed as part of the celebration with Formula 1. This marks Mansell's fourth visit to the festival. He will drive his championship-winning Williams FW14B and the race-winning FW11, which nearly secured him a championship in 1986 before a tyre failure in Adelaide.
Mansell's career is legendary, filled with incredible speed and fierce rivalries. His journey was one of overcoming challenges, supported by his wife Rosanne; they recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. His aggressive style and refusal to give up earned him fans worldwide, especially in the UK and Italy, where Ferrari fans called him 'Il Leone' (the lion).
In America, he won the IndyCar World Series in 1993 after his F1 Championship win in 1992. He briefly held both major single-seater titles simultaneously. Rarely do individual overtakes become legendary, but Mansell has four memorable ones: Silverstone 1987 against Nelson Piquet; Hungary 1989 against Ayrton Senna; Mexico 1990 against Gerhard Berger; and Barcelona 1991 again with Senna.
Mansell entered Formula 1 in 1980 as Colin Chapman's protégé. After Chapman's sudden death in 1982, Mansell struggled at Lotus until he switched to Williams and won his first Grand Prix at Brands Hatch in 1985. Between then and his retirement in 1994, he won an additional 30 races.
Mansell retired as Britain's most successful F1 driver by race wins, second only to Sir Lewis Hamilton today. His record of securing pole positions during the dominant 1992 season was only surpassed by Sebastian Vettel in 2011.
Festival Highlights
Since debuting at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2006, Mansell has thrilled fans by driving significant cars from his career. In addition to appearances, his cars have been showcased at Goodwood. In a notable moment in 2023, Sebastian Vettel drove the FW14B using sustainable fuel for his 'Race Without Trace' initiative.
This year’s festival celebrates the F1 World Championship's milestone anniversary. Mansell will join other champions like Alain Prost and Mario Andretti in the Champions class. More legendary F1 names will be announced soon.
Nigel Mansell expressed excitement about returning to Goodwood: "I’m looking forward to returning to the Festival of Speed this summer and celebrating 75 years of the Formula 1 World Championship. It’s been amazing to drive the Goodwood hillclimb in a number of my cars over the years, and I can’t wait to do it all again!"
Anticipation Builds for Festival
The Duke of Richmond CBE DL shared enthusiasm about Mansell's return: "I couldn’t be happier that Nigel will be coming back to the Festival of Speed this year... Nigel was more than just a legend of the sport; he was a hero... We got a small glimpse of ‘Mansell Mania’ when he came to Goodwood three years ago."
Nigel Mansell joins previously announced champions Alain Prost and Mario Andretti for this grand celebration alongside Carl Fogarty's recognition as a four-time WorldSBK Champion. The event also features Gordon Murray Automotive’s Central Feature sculpture.
Tickets for Friday through Sunday are sold out; however, limited Thursday tickets remain available at goodwood.com.
