Nick Tandy Makes History As First Driver To Complete Endurance Racing Grand Slam
Nick Tandy, a Porsche factory driver, has made history in endurance racing. On January 26, he won the Rolex 24 At Daytona with a Porsche 963, completing the "Grand Slam" of endurance racing. This achievement includes victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nürburgring 24 Hours, and Spa-Francorchamps. No other driver has accomplished this feat before.
Tandy's journey to this milestone began in 2015 when he won Le Mans with a Porsche 919 Hybrid. He continued his success with victories at Nürburgring in 2018 and Spa-Francorchamps in 2020, both driving the Porsche 911 GT3 R. His recent triumph at Daytona fulfilled his long-standing ambition to achieve the "Grand Slam."
When Porsche Penske Motorsport introduced the new 963 program, Tandy was eager to participate. He expressed his desire to race in North America and aimed for an overall victory at Daytona. After two years of not achieving desired results there, he finally succeeded, bringing immense satisfaction.
Tandy's motivation to complete the "Grand Slam" intensified after his Spa win in 2020. Although he never publicly discussed this goal, it remained a personal focus. Ironically, his main competitor was Earl Bamber, who shared victories with him at Le Mans and Spa.
The Nürburgring race is particularly challenging due to its demanding nature. Tandy noted that while six cars might compete for victory at Le Mans or Daytona, up to 30 cars have a realistic chance at Nürburgring. Despite early setbacks like a puncture and collisions, Tandy's team persevered to win.
Spa-Francorchamps presented its own difficulties in 2020. The track's relentless nature and numerous full-course yellows tested drivers' endurance. Despite these challenges, strategic decisions helped Tandy's team maintain their lead and ultimately secure victory.
Memorable Moments
Tandy recalls significant moments from his career with fondness. Winning Le Mans for the first time was unforgettable for him as it is considered the pinnacle of endurance racing. Similarly, overcoming obstacles at Nürburgring and Spa added to his sense of accomplishment.
Reflecting on his achievements, Tandy expressed disbelief and joy: "To be the first human being ever to achieve something like this in the world – it’s absolutely incredible." His emotional reaction highlights the significance of this milestone in his career.
The Future Ahead
As Tandy prepares for future races like the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, he remains focused on maintaining his competitive edge. His dedication to endurance racing continues to drive him forward as he seeks new challenges and opportunities on the track.
