Politecnico Di Milano Achieves New Autonomous Speed Record With Maserati MC20 At Indy Autonomous Challenge

The Politecnico di Milano's AI-Driver has achieved a new autonomous speed record with the Indy Autonomous Challenge Maserati MC20 Coupe, reaching 197.7 mph (318 km/h) at the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida held at Kennedy Space Center. This collaboration between Indy Autonomous Challenge and Politecnico di Milano marks a significant step in autonomous driving technology.

The Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility (LLF), known for its 15,000-foot runway, hosted this record-breaking event. Originally used for NASA Space Shuttle landings, the LLF now supports aerospace innovation and testing. The AI driver software was developed by the PoliMOVE-MSU team, part of Politecnico di Milano's AIDA project.

The Maserati MC20 Coupe, equipped with advanced AI from Politecnico di Milano, surpassed the previous autonomous car speed record of 192.8 mph set in April 2022. This achievement demonstrates how high-speed autonomous racing can influence streetcar technology, enhancing safety and performance.

Paul Mitchell, CEO of Indy Autonomous Challenge and Aidoptation BV, stated, "These world speed records are much more than just a showcase of future technology; we are pushing AI-driver software and robotics hardware to the absolute edge." The tests conducted with the Maserati MC20 have pushed autonomous technology to its limits.

Prof. Sergio Matteo Savaresi from Politecnico di Milano explained that high-speed tests aim to evaluate robo-drivers' behaviour in extreme conditions. These AI systems have been tested since 2021 in production vehicles at legal road speeds during Indy Autonomous Challenge races.

After setting the new record, another Maserati MC20 Cielo convertible joined the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida convoy. This vehicle had previously participated in the 2023 edition of the historical 1000 Miglia race in Italy, covering approximately 60 km autonomously.

Italian Engineering Excellence

Massimo Cicatiello, President of EGA USA, commented on the synergy between 1000 Miglia Experience Florida and Politecnico di Milano's technologies: "The 1000 Miglia has never been just a race; it is a journey through history." The presence of Maserati MC20 Cielo highlights Italian engineering excellence on an international stage.

This collaboration between Indy Autonomous Challenge and Politecnico di Milano aims to advance autonomous vehicle technologies further. Supported by Maserati and 1000 Miglia Experience Florida, this partnership seeks to solve real-world challenges while enhancing safety and performance in both motorsports and urban transportation.

The Indy Autonomous Challenge continues to drive innovation in autonomous technologies through high-speed racing competitions among university-affiliated teams worldwide. Founded in 2019, IAC aims to validate physical AI systems' safety and performance through real-world applications.

Maserati produces unique cars known for their style and technology. Their lineup includes models like Grecale SUV and GranTurismo Folgore electric version. With a focus on luxury mobility, Maserati aligns with Stellantis' strategic plan to expand Italian luxury globally by 2030.
