National Lok Adalat On December 13: Best Time To Reduce/Clear Traffic Fines - All The Details

A National Lok Adalat will be held across several Indian states on 13 December 2025, giving vehicle owners a one-day opportunity to settle pending traffic challans at reduced fines. The National Lok Adalat will cover thousands of compoundable traffic cases that would otherwise take months to close through regular court hearings.

The National Lok Adalat initiative is aimed at clearing traffic challan backlogs and helping motorists resolve old e-challans before they attract higher penalties or legal action from the state. States participating in the Lok Adalat will allow drivers to present eligible challans directly before benches designated to handle minor traffic violations.

These include cases such as signal jumping, overspeeding within the compoundable range, wrong parking, missing PUC certificates, number-plate violations, seatbelt or helmet offences and other non-serious breaches. The process does not apply to cases involving accidents, drunk driving or any non-compoundable offence, which will continue through regular courts.

Lok Adalat - How You Can Reduce Your Motoring Fines

The first step for motorists is to check if they have pending challans. This can be done on the Parivahan e-Challan portal or the official traffic police website of the relevant state. Drivers must note the challan numbers and download or screenshot the details. Carrying a printout is advisable, along with the vehicle's registration certificate (RC), driving licence, valid ID proof and any official notices received earlier.

To reduce penalties on the day of the Lok Adalat, motorists must take their challan documents to the designated court or settlement centre. A conciliator will review the challan and confirm whether the offence qualifies for settlement.

Once cleared, the conciliator applies a reduced fine based on state-level guidelines. In many states, reductions range from 30% to 75%, depending on the offence and when the challan was issued. The revised amount is then presented to the applicant for payment.

Motorists can pay the reduced fine on the spot, either digitally or in cash, depending on the facility available at each centre. After payment, the conciliator issues a final settlement order, confirming that the case has been closed permanently. This ensures that the challan does not appear in future police records or escalate into a legal proceeding.

The December 13 session of the National Lok Adalat is expected to be one of the largest traffic-related Lok Adalat drives this year. Officials have requested motorists with old challans to make use of the opportunity, as fines can increase significantly if left unpaid, especially with states tightening enforcement and linking challan databases with insurance and vehicle fitness checks.
