MG Astor Struggles To Capture Market Interest Amidst Declining Sales In India

In 2021, MG Motor launched the Astor in India, aiming to capture the market with its innovative features. Despite the initial excitement, the Astor's sales have been disappointing. In February 2025, only 264 units were sold, a stark contrast to the 47,055 compact SUVs sold in India that month. This suggests that only one out of every 200 buyers chose the Astor.

The Astor was introduced as India's first car with AI capabilities, following MG's trend of launching technologically advanced vehicles. Previously, MG had released the Hector in 2019 as India's first Internet-connected car and the Gloster in 2020 with Level-1 ADAS features. The Astor continued this innovation streak but failed to capture the market's interest.

MG Astor s Sales Decline in India

The Astor is a compact SUV just over 4 meters long, packed with features like a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control, and a wireless phone charger. It also includes ventilated front seats, a powered driver's seat, and a 360-degree camera. These offerings were impressive for its size and price point, initially attracting buyers.

Despite these features and an attractive price under 10 lakhs, Indian consumers have largely overlooked the Astor. Sales started strong but gradually declined. By February 2024, only 1,036 units were sold, and this number dropped significantly by February 2025.

In February 2025, the MG ZS EV electric car managed to sell 399 units, surpassing the Astor's sales. This indicates that even premium electric vehicles are more appealing to consumers than the Astor. The decline in sales suggests underlying issues that MG Motor needs to address promptly.

The overall compact SUV market in India is thriving, with vehicles measuring between 4.2 and 4.4 meters selling well. However, the Astor's poor performance highlights its struggle to compete effectively within this segment.

MG Motor has introduced several successful models in India since launching the Hector in 2019. However, the Astor has not lived up to expectations despite its advanced technology and competitive pricing.

The initial optimism surrounding the Astor's launch was high due to its AI capabilities and feature-rich package. Yet, these factors have not translated into sustained sales success for MG Motor in India.

The significant drop in sales from February 2024 to February 2025 underscores a need for MG Motor to reassess its strategy for the Astor. Without addressing these challenges, customer interest may continue to wane.
