This Mercedes Luxury Unimog Truck Makes G Wagons Look Normal

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks has revealed a luxury interpretation of the iconic Unimog to mark the model's 80th anniversary, blending its long-standing reputation for extreme off-road capability with enhanced comfort, upgraded power, and design elements aimed at broadening its appeal beyond traditional utility roles.

The luxury Unimog has been developed in collaboration with Hellgeth Engineering and serves as a showcase project demonstrating how the Unimog's rugged mechanical foundation can be combined with premium detailing while retaining its ability to operate in demanding terrains and challenging environments.

Despite the visual and comfort upgrades, the vehicle remains mechanically rooted in the Unimog U 4023, retaining its torsionally flexible ladder frame, portal axles, selectable all-wheel drive, and locking differentials on both axles, which remain central to its off-road performance credentials.

Power comes from a Mercedes-Benz OM 936 six-cylinder diesel engine producing around 300 horsepower, replacing the standard four-cylinder unit and offering increased output alongside smoother power delivery, improved drivability, and enhanced tractive performance across varied operating conditions.

Externally, the luxury Mercedes Unimog is finished in a matte grey paint scheme and rides on 20-inch aluminium beadlock wheels, reinforcing its off-road intent while adding a more contemporary visual identity compared to the standard utilitarian Unimog variants.

Lighting has been modernised with LED units, and conventional exterior mirrors have been replaced by Mercedes' digital MirrorCam system, which uses cameras and in-cab displays to improve visibility while reducing blind spots during operation in tight or uneven terrain.

Inside, the double-cab configuration allows seating for up to four occupants and introduces premium materials uncommon for the model, including high-quality leather upholstery, contrast stitching, leather floor mats, and ambient LED lighting throughout the cabin.

The interior upgrades are intended to elevate comfort without compromising functionality, demonstrating how the Unimog platform can be adapted for use cases requiring extended operating hours, multi-day expeditions, or specialised customer applications demanding higher comfort standards.

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks has stated that the luxury Unimog will not remain a static showpiece, with plans to deploy the vehicle at a customer site next year to gather real-world operational feedback and evaluate its performance outside controlled demonstration environments.

Franziska Cusumano, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, said, "With the luxury Unimog show car, we have realized our vision of combining the legendary robustness and off-road capability of the Unimog with an entirely new standard of comfort and engineering skills. This Unimog is a statement of innovation and passion."
