2025 Mercedes-Benz CLA EV & Hybrid Models Introduced With Advanced Features

The Mercedes-Benz CLA has been unveiled as the brand's latest entry-level sedan, featuring both electric and hybrid powertrains. Initially previewed in September 2023, this model marks a shift from Mercedes' previous approach of developing bespoke EVs alongside combustion models. The CLA EV and hybrid will share the same model name, with an expected launch in India by the end of 2025.

The CLA EV boasts an impressive range, surpassing even the flagship EQS sedan. The entry-level CLA 250+ with EQ Technology claims a range of 792km, while the all-wheel-drive CLA 350 4Matic offers 770km. These figures await homologation under the WLTP cycle. Notably, the rear-wheel-drive CLA exceeds the EQS 580's range of 770km from a 118kWh battery.

Mercedes Benz CLA Powertrain & Efficiency

Efficiency is key to the CLA EV's performance, achieved through an 85kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery. This results in efficiency exceeding 9.0km/kWh. The new rear-mounted permanent magnet motor enhances output while being lighter and more compact. It features a two-speed gearbox similar to Porsche Taycan's, producing 272hp for a swift acceleration from 0-100kph in just 6.7 seconds.

The four-wheel-drive CLA 350 4Matic adds a front axle motor with a single-speed gearbox, boosting combined output to 354hp and reducing its sprint time to 4.9 seconds. When not needed, this additional motor decouples from the front axle, cutting energy losses by up to 90 percent.

Charging Capabilities & Hybrid Powertrain

Thanks to its advanced electrical architecture, the CLA EV supports fast charging at rates up to 320kW, allowing a quick top-up of up to 300km in just ten minutes. Besides the standard battery, a smaller lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) pack will be available later.

The hybrid variant combines a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a small battery and electric motor, offering diesel-like efficiency according to Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius. The hybrid delivers either 136hp or 163hp through front wheels or up to 191hp in the top-tier model with all-wheel drive.

Design & Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics play a crucial role in achieving the CLA EV's range figures. Despite being larger than its predecessor, meticulous design efforts have resulted in a drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.21, slightly behind that of the EQS (0.20). Features like recessed wheels and strategic air flow channels contribute significantly.

Both CLA variants share nearly identical designs inside and out for the first time at Mercedes-Benz. The exterior highlights include lighting elements emphasising the brand's logo on headlights and brake lights. The EV features a flush grille adorned with backlit stars surrounding the main badge.

Interior Features & Technology

Inside, the new CLA adopts sportier styling compared to its luxury counterparts. Front seats feature prominent side bolsters with vibrant material choices like black-and-white Alcantara paired with faux leather and red stitching.

The dashboard showcases Mercedes' Superscreen setup spanning its entire width across three digital displays: a driver-focused instrument panel (10.25-inch), infotainment screen (14.6-inch), plus an optional passenger display (14-inch). Powered by MB.OS operating system incorporating AI functions such as ChatGPT integration alongside Google Gemini & Microsoft Bing services for enhanced user interaction.

Launch Timeline

The CLA is set for an initial European release around October as an EV followed by hybrids shortly after; both versions will also debut alongside estate models during Munich Motor Show next September before arriving in India late-2025.
