Mercedes-AMG Partners With MSCHF To Launch Exclusive Art Collection Featuring Automotive Design
Mercedes-AMG and the U.S. artist collective MSCHF are collaborating to present a unique collection at the NYCxDesign Festival from May 15 to 17, 2025. This partnership involves transforming original AMG vehicle components into exclusive furniture pieces. MSCHF, known for its innovative creations across various fields, has previously gained attention with its viral Big Red Boots.
The collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and MSCHF is a significant milestone, blending precision engineering with creative design. The concept collection, titled "Not for Automotive Use," pays tribute to Italy's Radical Design movement of the 1960s. It reimagines high-performance machines as everyday objects like standing lights or ergonomic chairs.
The furniture pieces in this collection are highly exclusive and made-to-order in limited quantities. Original AMG components are creatively integrated into each product. For instance, a seatbelt buckle serves as a switch for a floor lamp. The design process draws inspiration from Milanese designer Achille Castiglioni, known for repurposing everyday items into innovative designs.
MSCHF collaborated closely with the AMG design team in Affalterbach, Germany, to create these unique pieces. The collection includes items such as the SEATBELT SHELF and SEATBELT RACK, both made from milled aluminum and stabilized by seatbelts in AMG red and yellow. These shelves maintain even tension throughout.
The HEADREST CHAIR features three AMG headrests within a tubular steel frame inspired by race car roll cages. This chair supports the thighs and lower back while allowing vertical adjustment of the central headrest with the AMG crest. Another piece, the SEATBELT LIGHT, uses LED tube lights aligned with a functional seatbelt on an anodized aluminum frame.
The SEATBELT CHAIR incorporates nylon seatbelt webbing around a steel tube frame in AMG colours. The construction is anchored around the seatbelt attachment point for stability. Additionally, the WHEEL FAN is framed within an Interlagos wheel with adjustable speed settings on an anodized aluminum base.
Capsule Collection and Studio Premiere
An exclusive capsule collection complements the furniture offerings with graphical prints of AMG car parts on t-shirts, sweatshirts, baseball caps, and work trousers. Accessories include a fragrance tree shaped like an apple tree, referencing "Affalterbach," meaning "apple tree on the brook" in Old High German.
For its world premiere, MSCHF will open its Greenpoint studio in Brooklyn to select visitors for the first time. Previously undisclosed to the public, this studio will host a special vernissage showcasing much of its equipment as installation design elements.
This collaboration between Mercedes-AMG and MSCHF showcases how art can transform automotive components into functional yet artistic pieces. By integrating original AMG elements into their designs, they create a unique blend of engineering excellence and creative expression that pays homage to past design movements while pushing boundaries in contemporary art.
