Matt Hagan Achieves Runner-Up Finish With TSR Dodge//SRT Hellcat At NHRA Summit Nationals
Matt Hagan, a four-time NHRA Funny Car World Champion, showcased his driving prowess at the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment Nationals. Competing in his Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) Direct Connection Dodge//SRT Hellcat, Hagan secured a runner-up finish. Despite the challenging 144-degree track temperatures, he demonstrated remarkable starting reactions, particularly in the final round against reigning world champion Austin Prock.
Hagan's journey to the final was formidable, facing three former world champions: J.R. Todd, Jack Beckman, and Cruz Pedregon. In the final showdown with Prock, Hagan achieved an impressive 0.050 starting line light compared to Prock’s 0.069. However, Prock managed to edge out Hagan with a time of 4.064 seconds against Hagan's 4.095 seconds.
Tony Stewart, Hagan's TSR teammate and Motorsports Hall of Famer, reached his eighth consecutive semifinals in the Top Fuel category at the same event. Despite engine issues during qualifying and eliminations, Stewart's team persevered under hot conditions. He defeated Kyle Wurtzel and former world champion Steve Torrence before narrowly losing to Clay Millican in the semifinals.
Stewart's consistent performance extended his NHRA Mission Top Fuel points lead to 52 over Shawn Langdon as they approach the NHRA Northwest Nationals scheduled for July 18-20 in Seattle.
Reflecting on his performance, Hagan expressed satisfaction with his team's efforts despite recent close losses. "As for driving the racecar, it was a lot of fun this weekend," said Hagan. "When they go fast and straight, that’s great, but today you didn’t know what to expect."
In another highlight from the event, Ohio native Mark Pawuk triumphed in the FlexJet Factory Stock Showdown at his home track. Driving an Empaco Equipment Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak car, Pawuk defeated Scott Libersher in the final round and now leads the points standings by 80 points.
Pawuk shared his excitement about winning at home: "This is a huge win for me at my home track," he said. "I love the Bader family, and they have the best drag racing facility in the country."
The upcoming NHRA Northwest Nationals will see both Hagan and Stewart back on track from July 18-20. The event promises intense competition as drivers aim to secure crucial points midway through the season.
