Maserati MSG Racing Achieves Double Points Finish At Rain-affected Shanghai E-Prix

Jake Hughes and Stoffel Vandoorne expertly navigated a rain-affected Sunday, securing valuable points for Maserati MSG Racing. Despite challenging weather at the Shanghai E-Prix, both drivers demonstrated skill and strategy to achieve strong finishes. Hughes ended the race in fourth place, while Vandoorne secured seventh, contributing significantly to the team's championship standings.

The rain heavily impacted the second race of the Shanghai E-Prix weekend. The final practice session saw limited action due to persistent rain at the Shanghai International Circuit. This adverse weather continued into qualifying, where both Hughes and Vandoorne performed well in their respective groups. However, due to the conditions, the Duels were cancelled, and grid positions were determined by group qualifying results.

Maserati MSG Racing's Strong Finish in Shanghai

The FIA Formula E organisers anticipated poor weather and adjusted the schedule accordingly. Despite delays, there was enough time for the race to proceed. The event began under Safety Car conditions due to standing water on the track. After five laps behind the Safety Car, a rolling start commenced the race, with three additional laps added later.

During the race, Hughes overtook Lucas di Grassi from Lola YAMAHA early on. With larger gaps between cars than usual, activating Attack Mode did not result in significant position losses for either driver. Both Hughes and Vandoorne managed their energy efficiently throughout the race.

Maserati MSG Racing's performance was commendable as both drivers maintained control in wet conditions. Hughes aimed to challenge Porsche's Antonio Felix da Costa for a podium finish but prioritised energy management over risky moves. This strategic approach helped Maserati reclaim sixth place in the team championship standings.

The FIA Formula E World Championship will continue on June 21st in Jakarta. Team Principal Cyril Blais expressed satisfaction with both cars finishing in points positions despite earlier setbacks. He noted that their pace was strong in wet conditions and highlighted effective management of energy, tyres, and strategy.

Reflections from Key Figures

Jake Hughes remarked on ending his points drought since Jeddah with a solid performance over two days in Shanghai. "We finished up here in Shanghai on a positive note," he said. "It feels like a long time coming since I finished in the points – last time was Jeddah."

Stoffel Vandoorne acknowledged initial challenges but noted improved tyre performance as the race progressed: "Today was a really tricky one, especially at the start of the race; visibility was challenging." He gradually gained pace and positions during the event.

Maserati's Commitment to Excellence

Maria Conti emphasised teamwork and determination as crucial factors behind Maserati's success despite adverse weather conditions: "Today we are taking home some important points for the standings despite rain that strongly influenced round." She highlighted Shanghai's symbolic significance for Maserati's electric mobility values.

Maserati S.p.A., known for its unique car range combining style with technology across over 70 markets globally, continues its commitment towards luxury mobility innovation aligned with Stellantis' strategic plan 'Dare Forward 2030'.

Maserati MSG Racing remains committed to sustainability while excelling technically within motorsport’s premier fully-electric category since joining FIA Formula E World Championship back in December 2013.
