Maserati MSG Racing Concludes Challenging Double Header In Tokyo With Mixed Results

Maserati MSG Racing experienced a challenging weekend in Japan, with mixed results. Jake Hughes finished 18th, while Stoffel Vandoorne couldn't complete the race due to late contact. The team had high hopes after a previous win in Tokyo but faced difficulties during Round 9. Both drivers were aware of the importance of the session, especially with no qualifying and clear weather conditions.

Stoffel Vandoorne began in Group A, feeling confident after adjustments post-Free Practice 3. However, Mitch Evans' crash caused delays, and traffic hindered Stoffel's progress to the duels by half a second. Jake Hughes, in Group B, struggled with tyre temperatures, narrowly missing out on advancing as well. The team opted for different strategies: Jake took an aggressive early Attack Mode, while Stoffel followed a more conventional approach.

Unfortunately for Jake, a late safety car deployment for McLaren's Taylor Barnard disrupted his strategy. With no time to add laps, he had only one lap left to activate his remaining Attack Mode minutes. This forced him to slow down significantly on the final lap to avoid penalties, dropping him to the bottom of the order.

Stoffel's race ended prematurely when contact with Nissan's Norman Nato caused significant damage. As Stoffel attempted an overtake during Attack Mode, Nato experienced a torque cut leading to a collision. This incident lifted Stoffel's car briefly into the air, resulting in a broken front wing and puncture that forced his retirement from the race.

The team now focuses on improving their qualifying performance for future races. They aim to return stronger in Shanghai by optimising their strategies and understanding tyre behaviour better. Despite setbacks, Maserati MSG Racing remains committed to enhancing their performance.

Driver Insights and Team Goals

Jake Hughes expressed mixed feelings about the weekend: "Overall, we can only say it’s a successful weekend; any weekend the team get a win is successful weekend." He noted issues with tyre preparation affecting qualifying results but remained optimistic about learning from these experiences for upcoming races.

Stoffel Vandoorne shared his disappointment: "It was a tough race today and unfortunately I didn’t finish." He acknowledged potential points lost due to unforeseen incidents but emphasised the need for improved qualifying consistency moving forward.

Leadership Perspectives

Cyril Blais, Team Principal of Maserati MSG Racing, reflected on missed opportunities: "We have to self-reflect on today; we didn’t do the job in qualifying." He highlighted strategic decisions made during the race but acknowledged challenges faced by both drivers due to external factors like safety cars.

Maria Conti from Maserati Corse praised overall efforts despite setbacks: "Today's race finished off an extraordinary weekend in Tokyo." She emphasised lessons learned throughout this eventful period which will contribute towards future improvements both on-track and off-track operations within their organisation.

Maserati continues its mission of delivering exceptional vehicles globally while focusing on innovation within luxury segments under Stellantis’ strategic plan "Dare Forward 2030." Their diverse lineup includes models such as Grecale SUV or GranTurismo Folgore electric version alongside traditional petrol-powered options like MC20 super sports car equipped with advanced technologies derived from Formula One racing circuits worldwide.
